Afghan Held with 65 kg Drugs in Tajikistan


Dushanbe (Tajikistan), Jan 18 (IANS/RIA Novosti): An Afghan national has been held in Tajikistan carrying over 65 kg of drugs in four bags, according to the Tajikistan government.

The 50-year-old was held near the Tajik-Afghan border, a spokesperson for the country's interior ministry said.

"As a result of a special operation, Abdulokhir Alimakhmad, was detained on suspicion of drug trafficking on January 16," Makhmadullo Asadulloyev said Thursday. "He had four bags containing 65.6 kilograms of cannabis group drugs."

In 2012, Tajik law enforcement bodies and security structures seized about six tonnes of drugs, including 515 kg of heroin, 630 kg of raw opium and some 4.8 tonnes of cannabis group drugs.

The volume of seized drugs increased 41.1 percent on 2011.
