Tendulkar Running Out of Form and Time

Bangalore, Nov 27 (DHNS): It’s not often that you hear former cricketers voice their concern with regard to Sachin Tendulkar’s presence in the Indian team. And if that voice happens to be of a certain Sunil Gavaskar, then one has to sit up and take note.

Without indicating in as many words that the time has come for the Mumbai veteran to plan his exit, the former India skipper suggested that the National selectors have a word with Tendulkar to know his future plans.

“... At the end of the day, it is the selectors who will take the call. I think the selectors will probably have a word with Tendulkar about what his future plans are and then take a call,” the former Indian captain told a TV channel after Tendulkar got out for another low score against England in the second Test on Sunday.

Nearing 40 and in his 23rd year as an international cricketer, the right-hander has endured a prolonged lean patch since India’s tour of England in 2011. Tendulkar, since the Lord’s Test against England in July 2011, has managed just 720 runs in 13 matches at an average of 32.22, way less than his career average of 54.64. The hushed up talks for his retirement are gathering steam with each of his failures.

Given Tendulkar’s high standing in Indian cricket, there is no dearth of people who will stick their necks out in his support. Senior BCCI official and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla was quick to say that one needs to look at Sachin’s “colossal record” before making any comment.

“He will hang up his boots when he thinks it’s time for him to go. He does not need any advice on this. Before making a comment on his performance, you have to see his colossal record and his past performance,” Shukla told reporters outside the Parliament House, adding the veteran cricketer would come back strongly in the coming matches.

Tendulkar has always bounced back whenever the knives have been out for him, but there is no denying that patience has been wearing thin. What has accentuated the situation is India’s unexpected defeat at the hands of England on Monday at Mumbai, Tendulkar’s backyard. The Master Blaster, who managed just 16 runs at the Wankhede before falling to the left-arm spin of Monty Panesar in both innings, has scored just 29 runs in the two-Test-old series. With youngsters like Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli proving their credentials at the highest level, there is a simmering consensus that Tendulkar should follow the examples of his long-time team-mates Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman who retired following India’s 0-4 defeat Down Under.

For someone who was referred to as a nightmare of bowlers, that is some fall in stature.

Ms Jamini, I agree with you, Sachin WAS good. Currently he has cemented his place just by basking in his past glory. We had disastrous results in the past series Aus, Eng, Bangla, and now again in India. Did he rise up to the occasion, one can be fluke, two can be a fluke, but not 10 in a row. Ideally this is he should have performed at least to save the match leave alone winning. Scoring centuries against a hapless Railways team or Bangladesh won’t help the nation. Who cares for records or record books, when you cannot win matches.

No comments on the batting side of Sachin as a good batsman but team spirit is not seen in him when compared to Shewag who is least bothered about his individual performence.

Dear Sachin, Trust all is well at your end, it’s with great regret I state that ,you were never a match winner but played only for your own records ,unlike your contemporaries like Qallis & Ponting. You ran after endorsements and ads, made enough money to last couple of generations. Greed has overcome you, the classic example was the way you sold your gifted Ferrari. You should thank your stars, for being born in a right country, were the pitches are flat and you can bat for 3 days, the country were you are overhyped, overrated by the foolish media and illiterate people who call you God. A country were rules like ‘perform or perish’ does not exist, please note that you are not bigger than the game. Its time you hang your boots in grace & let some younger player have a chance. What are you waiting for, a series against Afghanistan, so you can retire on a high? You are just so pathetic. Get a life mate ! Painfully yours, Lingappa.

No doubt he has a collosal record against his name, but past is past. He has played his part and we acknowledge it. But there are many youngsters who are knocking at the doors of test cricket, Tendulkar should realise that he is delaying someone else's opportunity. Its also ridiculous on part of BCCI and ors to speak to Tendulkar about his future plans. Why are ors given power to choose and a player? Let them use the same yardstick for everyone. This is the problem with Indian cricket, they feel Tendulkar is above cricket. Let the BCCI or ors learn from Australia, they hold the game high and not a aging cricketer who runs out of form and becomes a liability. They call a spade a Spade.

Tendulkar is in such lean patch that even I and U bowl he will get out and the test bowlers no need to waste their enegry to claim his wicket. The BCCI still supporting that he should decide his future in cricket, then this should be appropriate to all the cricketers until they decide when they hang up and certainly not BCCI or ors.
