Mangaluru, Sep 12: While there is relief that no taluk in Dakshina Kannada district has currently been included in the state's drought-affected list, the sharp decline in normal rainfall has begun making people feel as though summer has arrived during the monsoon itself. Over the past week, temperatures and humidity have intensified across the coastal region. Although mornings remain slightly cool, scorching sunshine prevails throughout the day.

Dakshina Kannada district has not found a place in the state government's first phase of the drought-affected list. The primary reason is the good rainfall received during August, which helped compensate for the initial deficit. Moderate rainfall is expected in some parts until the end of September, after which the southwest monsoon will withdraw and the northeast monsoon will set in. However, weather experts have warned that the northeast monsoon could also be weaker this year due to the increased influence of El Niño.

In recent years, low-pressure systems have been the main source of rainfall for the coastal region. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the region received good rainfall in July and August due to low-pressure systems that developed over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

Over the past two years, both the intensity and frequency of cyclones in the country have declined considerably. Low-pressure systems developing over the sea are failing to intensify into cyclones and are weakening quickly.

Normally, winter follows the monsoon season, but changes are expected this year as well. Due to the influence of El Niño, the experience of cold weather may reduce. Instead of intense cold, sunshine and humidity are likely to dominate.
