Mangaluru, Sep 24: A murder accused managed to escape from police custody under the pretext of visiting the washroom at the court complex in Mangaluru on Tuesday, September 22.

The absconding accused has been identified as Prasad.

According to the FIR, Prasad is an accused in a 2018 murder case registered at the Moodbidri police station.

On Tuesday morning, he, along with three co-accused—Sandeep Shetty, Balaraj, and Prabhakar—appeared before the 2nd Additional District and Sessions Court for a hearing.

As Prasad had failed to appear during the previous hearing, a warrant had been issued against him. Since no lawyer was representing him, the judge remanded Prasad to police custody.

Police constable Ashok S T from the Moodbidri police station subsequently took custody of the accused.

After collecting the remand warrant, Ashok was escorting Prasad to the Mangaluru District Prison when the incident occurred. Around 3:30 pm, near the 3rd Additional District and Sessions Court, Prasad asked to use the washroom and managed to give the police the slip.

Based on the complaint filed by the constable, a fresh case has been registered at the Mangaluru North police station under section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
