‘Disorder and distrust define today’s world’: Army Chief highlights changing global power dynamics

New Delhi, May 19: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Monday said the world is passing through a phase of increasing geopolitical uncertainty marked by “disorder, distrust and dichotomy in alliances”, as nations continue to navigate conflicts and shifting power equations.

Addressing a seminar on “Security to Prosperity: Smart Power for Sustained National Growth” at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies in Delhi, General Dwivedi said global politics is becoming increasingly complex, with strategic interests now influencing economic prosperity.

He remarked that instead of reducing tensions, prosperity is now being shaped and reorganised through power politics and geopolitical influence.

The Army Chief’s comments come amid continuing tensions in several parts of the world, including the fragile ceasefire situation involving the US, Israel and Iran.

Speaking about India’s response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, General Dwivedi praised “Operation Sindoor” as an example of India’s coordinated and calibrated national response.

He said the operation combined military precision, information management, diplomatic signalling and economic resolve into a single strategic action.

According to him, the operation struck terror infrastructure effectively and challenged existing strategic assumptions, while the planned halt after 88 hours reflected India’s calculated use of smart power.

General Dwivedi further stated that knowing when to stop military action is equally important in achieving long-term strategic and national objectives.
