Colombo, Aug 25: Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was handed an official reprimand and one demerit point on Tuesday for damaging cricket equipment following his dismissal during the second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
Jayasuriya was found guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to the "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match."
The incident occurred at the end of Day 2 of the Test. Sent in as a nightwatchman, Jayasuriya was dismissed by left-arm spinner Manav Suthar. Frustrated after his dismissal, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat while walking back to the pavilion and later threw his gloves in anger.
Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft, meaning no formal hearing was required. The charge was brought by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.
Jayasuriya had been adjudged plumb in front by Suthar and opted for a review. However, the ball struck his pad before making contact with the bat, while the review showed umpire's call on impact with the stumps, leaving the on-field decision unchanged.
His dismissal was Sri Lanka's second wicket in the final three overs of the day, leaving the hosts reeling at 8/2 after India had declared at 503/9.
Jayasuriya is the third player to face ICC disciplinary action during the match, following India's Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando.
Jaiswal and Fernando were each fined 25 per cent of their match fees and handed one demerit point for their on-field confrontation. The ICC said both players breached Article 2.12 of its Code of Conduct, which relates to "inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match)."
The sanctions against Jaiswal and Fernando were also proposed by Pycroft. Both players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions without a formal hearing. Neither had accumulated any demerit points in the previous 24 months.
The confrontation took place during the 17th over when Fernando dismissed Jaiswal with a delivery that darted into the left-hander. As Jaiswal walked back, he appeared to hear something from the bowler before returning to confront him. The two players then banged heads during an ugly physical exchange before being separated quickly.
