Mangaluru, May 13: Lancy Joseph Mascarenhas, a towering visionary in Mangaluru’s real estate and construction landscape and the founder of Lancy Constructions, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. He was 77.

A man who quite literally shaped the skyline of modern Mangaluru, Lancy leaves behind a legacy of hard work, architectural brilliance, and communal harmony.

Born on February 13, 1949, Lancy’s journey is a remarkable tale of grit and perseverance. He entered the construction field in 1973 as a licensed plumber, undertaking small drainage and repair works. Through sheer dedication, strict quality control, and an unwavering commitment to his clients, he slowly transitioned into a civil contractor.

From humble beginnings to a construction empire

His major breakthrough came in 1982 when he was awarded the contract for the 'Dhanyavad' building at Hampankatta junction. The project's success made Lancy Constructions a household name. By 1984, he entered the apartment sector with 'Pompei Shade Apartments', paving the way for decades of monumental projects.

Over the years, his firm grew into a massive enterprise employing thousands, boasting modern equipment, and pioneering the use of ready-mix concrete plants in the city. The umbrella of his business expanded to include Eljen Promoters, Nishaal Associates, Lancy Constructions Fibretech Doors, Lanshowel Earthmovers, Lanwall Blocks, and Lanlocks.

An architect of harmony

Fondly regarded as an Ajaathashathru (a man without enemies), Lancy was deeply respected across all communities in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district. He was renowned not just for commercial and residential monoliths like the Essel Centre, Empire building, and Inland’s Ebony, but for his profound contribution to the spiritual landscape.

He constructed places of worship for various faiths, bridging community barriers. His portfolio includes over 25 churches (including the Bajpe church and Infant Jesus Church at Bikarnakatta), 4 mosques, and 3 temples, alongside the multi-storied auditorium complex for Sangha Niketan. Furthermore, his firm built vital educational and healthcare infrastructure, including the St. Aloysius College Administrative Block, multiple buildings at St. Joseph’s Engineering College, and the Unity Health Complex Nursing School.

In recognition of his immense contributions and ethical business practices, he was honored with the prestigious 'Rachana Entrepreneur of the Year' award in 2006.

Family and bereavement

Despite his towering success, those who knew Lancy described him as a down-to-earth, simple, and highly disciplined man who personally monitored his sites starting at 6:30 am every day.

He is survived by his wife, Philomena Jacintha Mascarenhas (affectionately known as Jessybai), who has been a strong pillar in both his life and business enterprises. He also leaves behind his daughters Nishal Swetha Mascarenhas (married to Ruban Rakesh D'Silva), Neleema Miriam Mascarenhas, and Neola Tressa Mascarenhas, as well as his beloved grandchildren, Ron Joseph D'Silva, Raizel Neva D'Silva, and Reagan Gilbert D'Silva.

Funeral details will be announced later.
