Mangaluru, May 6: Deputy commissioner (DC) Darshan H V has instructed the concerned officials to take necessary steps to implement skill development programmes effectively.

Chairing the District Skill Mission meeting held at the deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday, he said that providing skill development training to youth would help them generate self-employment opportunities. He stressed that the country’s youth must be empowered through employment-oriented training. He added that the PM SVANidhi and NIPUN schemes are ambitious initiatives that help empower small traders and youth.

He noted that the Pradhan Mantri Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme, launched in June 2020, aims to provide loan facilities to street vendors under the jurisdiction of urban local bodies in Dakshina Kannada district. He directed that beneficiaries must be made aware of the scheme.

He further stated that the PM SVANidhi scheme has now been restructured and extended by the central government until March 2030. The key objectives of the scheme include enhancing financial inclusion, encouraging digital transactions, promoting capacity building, and providing social security benefits to street vendors and their dependent family members.

It was also informed in the meeting that the scheme is being expanded in phases by including census towns, statutory towns, and semi-urban areas to widen its reach. Targets have been set to provide micro-credit facilities under the first, second, and third phases of the PM SVANidhi scheme, and it must be implemented as per the prescribed guidelines, officials said.

The DC instructed that directions be issued through the taluk panchayat executive officers to all panchayat development officers and NRLM staff working in gram panchayats to ensure the implementation of the PM SVANidhi scheme in all census towns within Dakshina Kannada district.

Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat deputy secretary Jayalakshmi Rayakod, District Skill Development officer Pradeep D’Souza, and officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
