Turkish police use tear gas, detain hundreds at May Day rally

Istanbul, May 1: Turkish police fired tear gas and detained hundreds of people during May Day demonstrations in Istanbul on Friday, as authorities moved to prevent gatherings at the iconic Taksim Square.

According to reports, riot-control vehicles were used to disperse crowds, with tear gas fired into groups attempting to assemble in the area.

A Turkish legal organisation said at least 370 people were detained during the crackdown.

The demonstrations were part of International Workers' Day, when workers and unions traditionally hold rallies across the country. However, authorities have long restricted access to Taksim Square, citing security concerns.

The incident has drawn criticism from rights groups, who alleged excessive use of force and curbs on the right to peaceful protest.
