London, Apr 27: Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe created history at the London Marathon by becoming the first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in an official competitive race.
The 31-year-old clinched victory with a stunning time of 1 hour 59 minutes and 30 seconds, breaking the previous record set by the late Kelvin Kiptum, who had clocked 2 hours and 35 seconds in 2023.

Sawe was already on record-breaking pace at the halfway mark, crossing in 1 hour and 29 seconds, before accelerating further in the second half. He made a decisive surge before the final 10 km, leaving most of the field behind.
Only Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha managed to respond, staying close to Sawe’s pace. In a remarkable performance on his marathon debut, Kejelcha also went under the two-hour mark, finishing second in 1 hour 59 minutes and 49 seconds.
Sawe’s achievement marks a historic milestone in marathon running, setting a new benchmark in competitive race conditions.
