Mangaluru, Feb 17: The Manel Srinivas Nayak Institute of Management (MSNIM) organised a one-day capacity building programme on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) of women at the workplace and in higher educational institutions on Friday, February 13, at its campus in Bondel. It aimed to strengthen institutional preparedness and deepen awareness of legal and ethical responsibilities in ensuring safe, equitable and accountable work environments. Delegates from ten educational institutions and six corporates attended the programme.

Shaila K Karagi, women and child welfare officer, department of women and child development, Mangaluru, was the chief guest. Manel Annappa Nayak, president of the Women’s National Education Society (WNES), presided over the programme. MSNIM director, Dr Molly S Chaudhuri was present.

Addressing the gathering, Karagi commended the institute for proactively engaging with the subject. She noted that academic institutions play a vital role in complementing governmental efforts to disseminate awareness about the PoSH Act. “A safe and supportive environment is essential for the overall development of women. Without dignity and security at the workplace, professional continuity becomes uncertain,” she said. She urged institutions to publicise the women’s helpline number 1091 and strengthen response mechanisms.

In his presidential remarks, Manel Annappa Nayak observed that although the Act has been in force for several years, it has gained significant public attention only in recent times, with both government and private organisations actively working to raise awareness. “A law becomes effective only when people are aware of it and understand how it protects them,” he said. Citing examples, he noted that such legislation empowers women, enabling them to become more independent and succeed in their personal and professional lives.

The day-long programme featured interactive sessions aimed at providing participants with both conceptual clarity and practical guidance. The first session examined workplace gender dynamics, the nature of sexual harassment, and persistent myths surrounding its impact. The second session reviewed global and national initiatives on prevention mechanisms and compliance frameworks. The third session focused on the constitution of Internal Committees and the due process involved in conducting inquiries under the Act.

The resource persons for the programme were Merlyn Martis, director and chief functionary, DEEDS, and Dr Laxmish Rai, certified PoSH trainer. Participants actively engaged in discussions and case-based analyses throughout the sessions.

Aparna Kamath, first-year MBA student, delivered the welcome address. Bhoomika Kamath, first-year MBA student, proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Gayathri, second-year MBA student. Nanditha Sunil, assistant professor, MSNIM, coordinated the programme.
