Colombo, Feb 15: With barely eight hours to go for the high-voltage India-Pakistan encounter at the T20 World Cup 2026, weather forecasts have cast a shadow over the much-anticipated clash at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
According to the Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology, a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal could bring up to a 70 per cent chance of rain in the Khettarama region, where the stadium is located. Forecast models predict the heaviest rainfall between 6 pm and 7 pm — just an hour before the scheduled 7 pm start — with around 5.1 mm of rain expected. Light drizzle between 7 pm and 10 pm (around 3.8 mm) is also likely.

Weather models indicate a 50–60 per cent chance of rain between 1 pm and 7 pm, raising the possibility of delays, interruptions or even a washout. On Saturday evening, the area witnessed continuous drizzle around 6 pm, shortly after India concluded their training session.
Both India and Pakistan currently have four points each from two matches. In case of a washout, both teams will share a point, which would confirm their qualification for the Super Eight stage.
There is, however, a provision for 60 minutes of extra time. The Premadasa Stadium is equipped with an advanced drainage system and extensive ground covers that protect not only the pitch but the entire playing area. The ground staff follow specialised protocols, manually pushing accumulated water towards perimeter drains — a method often faster than mechanical super soppers.
Under normal circumstances, the venue can be made match-ready within 45 to 60 minutes after heavy rain stops, offering a glimmer of hope for fans eagerly awaiting the marquee clash.
