India–US trade deal protects farm and dairy sectors, says Shivraj Singh Chouhan

New Delhi, Feb 5: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday asserted that the India–US trade agreement poses no risk to the country’s agricultural sector and fully safeguards the interests of farmers, particularly those engaged in farming and dairy.

Speaking to the media, Chouhan categorically said that India’s key agricultural produce — including food grains, fruits, millets, major crops and dairy products — remains completely protected under the agreement. He stressed that there is “absolutely no threat” to domestic agriculture.

The minister underlined that the deal has been structured to protect both small and large farmers, while also opening up new opportunities for growth and exports. “No market has been opened in a way that could harm Indian farmers. All major crops, food grains, fruits and dairy products remain fully shielded,” he said.

Responding to a recent post on X by the US Treasury Secretary regarding greater access for American agricultural products, Chouhan pointed out that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has already clarified the government’s position in Parliament.

“India has not taken any step that would put pressure on domestic farmers. Safeguards for critical agricultural commodities remain firmly in place,” he reiterated.

Chouhan further noted that India is already a major exporter of agricultural produce, including rice, to several countries such as the United States. He said India’s rice exports alone have recently touched nearly Rs 63,000 crore.

According to the minister, reduced tariffs under the agreement will benefit Indian exports of rice, spices and textiles, with the growth in textile exports expected to directly support millions of cotton farmers across the country.

Dismissing criticism from the opposition, Chouhan said the agreement is clearly in the interest of Indian farmers and that misleading narratives are being spread without facts. “The deal opens new export avenues for our farmers and strengthens India’s position in global markets,” he said.

He assured that detailed information about the agreement would be shared at the appropriate time, adding that the guiding principle of the government remains unchanged. “The interests of Indian farmers are fully protected,” he emphasised.

Stressing the importance of clear communication, Chouhan said unnecessary fear and confusion must be avoided in a sector as vast as agriculture. “Farmers are our annadata — the providers of life. Their welfare is the welfare of the nation, and their interests are completely secure,” he added.
