New Delhi, Jan 15: The Department of Posts has reached a significant milestone by successfully handling its first online order through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), the Ministry of Communications announced on Thursday.
The order was booked on January 13, with the Department of Posts acting as the Logistics Service Provider, and the consignment was delivered on January 15, marking the successful completion of the entire delivery cycle.
The inaugural order was placed by UdyamWell, an ONDC-enabled platform that supports Bharatpreneurs, including artisans, farmers and rural entrepreneurs, by providing end-to-end services for market access and logistics.

According to the ministry, the successful delivery represents an important step in the Department of Posts’ efforts to expand digitally enabled, interoperable logistics services across the country. With this integration, sellers using ONDC-enabled buyer applications can now select India Post for parcel pickup, booking, transportation and final delivery.
The service leverages the Department’s vast and well-established postal network, which has a presence even in the most remote regions of India, ensuring last-mile connectivity.
At present, the Department of Posts is operating on ONDC through the “Click & Book” model. Under this system, sellers can raise pickup requests online, choose India Post as their logistics partner, and have parcels collected directly from their premises. Postage charges are collected at the time of pickup, while consignments are digitally tracked and delivered through technology-driven logistics processes.
Officials said the inclusion of the Department of Posts as a Logistics Service Provider on ONDC is expected to significantly strengthen India’s digital commerce ecosystem. With its extensive reach, trusted public service legacy and growing digital capabilities, India Post’s participation is seen as a major boost for MSMEs and small sellers, enabling broader and more inclusive access to e-commerce across the country.
