Mangaluru: Smart meters mandatory for new power connections

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Dec 14: As per the directive of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission, installation of smart meters has been made mandatory for all new electricity connections across Karnataka, excluding irrigation pump sets, Mangaluru Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) has said.

MESCOM issued a clarification in view of reports suggesting concerns among consumers and contractors that smart meters require additional space and involve higher costs.

The power utility stated that, in line with the order, smart meters will be installed for all new electricity connections obtained on or after January 1, 2026. Since smart meters are being fitted only for new connections, there is no requirement to provide additional separate space for their installation. As the implementation begins from January 1, 2026, adequate time has been provided for consumers and contractors to make necessary arrangements.

MESCOM further clarified that installation of smart meters is not mandatory for existing electricity consumers. Hence, consumers and contractors have been urged to extend their cooperation, the release said.

Smart meters are digital devices used to measure and record energy consumption in real-time. Unlike traditional meters, smart meters can transmit data to energy suppliers automatically, eliminating the need for manual meter reading. They also provide customers with accurate insights into their energy usage, allowing them to make better-informed decisions about how and when they use energy. Presently the electricity meter reader issues the electricity bill (manual process) and the consumer can settle the bill online. New process yet to be known.
