Sullia, Nov 19: A pressure cooker left on a gas stove exploded in Borugudde, Sullia, on Wednesday morning, causing significant damage to a family kitchen.

The incident occurred at the residence of local resident Abubulla while breakfast was being prepared. “I heard a loud bang, and suddenly the kitchen was in ruins,” said Abubulla.

The blast damaged the kitchen walls, tiles, ceiling, and several cooking utensils.

Fortunately, family members were nearby at the time, but miraculously, no one was injured. “It was a close call, but thankfully everyone is safe,” Abubulla added.

Authorities have reminded residents to follow safety precautions while using pressure cookers to prevent similar accidents.

Spurious safety valve is the reason for this explosion ( or it would have melted and given vent to the excessive pressure build up); ensure you get the spare safety valves, gaskets etc from authorised dealers only!

Pressure cookers are manufactured in such a way that they will never explode. Either the rubber safety pin will puff off or the hasket gives the way for the air pressure before the metal bursts.

"A pressure cooker can explode due to clogged or faulty safety valves, defective gaskets or lid seals, or improper user operation, which prevents the buildup of steam from being released safely." Few years back I experienced a bad incident when the gasket gave way releasing the substance from pressure cooker through a gap. So I managed to switched off the burner from another side. But the noise of the pressurized substance flashing out sent shockwaves in me. Thankfully my wife was not in the kitchen. I was cooking Paya (totters) ! (The reason was in the gasket it had worn out)
