‘No interference acceptable in language of our prayers,’ says Roy Castelino on Kannada plea

Media Release

Bengaluru, Nov 12: Responding to recent media reports that Karnataka Rakshana Vedike leader T A Narayan Gowda and his team met Archbishop Dr Peter Machado of the Archdiocese of Bengaluru urging that prayers in churches be conducted in Kannada, president of Catholic Think Tank Committee, Bengaluru; public relations officer of Diocese of Mangalore and former president of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Roy Castelino has stated that no external interference will be accepted in deciding the language of religious services.

“Kannada is indeed the sovereign language of Karnataka — there is no dispute about that,” Castelino said in a statement.

“However, lakhs of people in the state speak other native languages such as Konkani, Tulu, Kodava, Byari, and Lambani. While respecting Kannada, it is also the responsibility of each linguistic community to preserve and promote their mother tongue, as guaranteed by the Constitution of India. The government too has extended various forms of support toward this,” he added.

Castelino noted that religion has played a vital role in preserving languages, citing the example of how Konkani has survived and thrived in Karnataka through the Christian community. “The state government has even established the Konkani Academy to promote the language,” he added.

He pointed out that within the Archdiocese of Bengaluru, prayers are already held in multiple languages including Kannada, English, Tamil, Malayalam, and Konkani. “The demand that prayers should be conducted only in Kannada may lead to future coercion, which we categorically oppose,” he said.

“We too raise our hands in support of Kannada. But it is we, and not others, who will decide the language of our liturgical prayers,” Castelino asserted.

Roy baab , it's a great honor to have such a leader like you, who can fly our mother tongue konkani to a peak. It's truly disturbing when someone is restricting the faithful to pray with his mother tongue. No doubt we respect and honor kannada.

Languages are meant to communicate with one another. No language should be imposed on anyone including places of worship. If Mr.Narayan desires only Kannada in Bangalore Archdiocese, does he know the historical background of our Archdiocese? Secondly in Hindu temples in what language prayers slogans are recited? Is it Kannada? Is Sanskrit is language of Karnataka? If no, why then he and his dispensation demand only Kannada to be in our churches? He has no role to play in our affairs. What has he to do with Bangalore Archdiocesan catholic faithful? He should first set his own house clean...let him take the log from his own eyes first before he could look others' specs...

Let Mr Narayan take care of his own prayers and instead of poking nose in other religion utilise time praying for religious tolerance or work for it. God bless him

Christianity is an international Faith embraced/followed by Billions of people worldwide speaking in several languages. All languages are good only which a person converse/speak other languages and know the vocabulary, sweetness and goodness of those languages. God Himself made the languages in the Genesis at the Tower of Babe. Prior to that there was only one language. Love for one language is dangerous to the society. Secondly, God knows all languages. He is not bound by Konkani, Kannada, English, Sanskrit, Hebrew, Latin Greek Arabic etc., etc... Many of Indian Churches/prayer meetings, while preaching translations is made. In Karnataka Churches are offering Mass in many languages at separate, separate timings. The mass offered in Churches must be understood to everyone, so the people can submit themselves and offer mass whole heartedly. There should not be a compulsion in language to anybody. Knowing most languages is a good and benefit/beneficial to oneself. So there should not have a compulsion in any particular language. Those impose a particular language upon the people they must know Konkani and Tulu languages, will they learn???!! My opinion is also same as Roy Castelino. There should not have any external interference in Christian Churches.

Well said Mr. Roy. Preserving and celebrating our mother tongues — be it Konkani, Tulu, Kodava, Byari, or others — is equally important, as they are integral threads in the fabric of Karnataka’s heritage.
