Yenepoya Medical College welcomes 1st MBBS batch of 2025 with white coat ceremony

Mangaluru, Oct 22: Yenepoya Medical College, a constituent unit of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), organised the White Coat Ceremony to welcome the first-year MBBS students of the 2025 batch at the Yendurance Zone, Deralakatte campus.

The event marked a significant milestone in the journey of the new students as they donned their white coats for the first time — a symbol of responsibility, compassion, and commitment to medical ethics.

The ceremony was graced by Dr Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), who attended as the chief guest. In his address, Dr Kunhi encouraged the new students to uphold the values of empathy, integrity, and lifelong learning throughout their medical careers.

The guests of honour for the event were Dr M Vijayakumar, vice chancellor; Dr B H Sripathi Rao, pro vice chancellor; and Dr K S Gangadhara Somayaji, registrar of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). The event also featured Dr. Mohammed Nuhman, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and director, Janapriya Hospital, Mangaluru, and an alumnus of Yenepoya Medical College (MBBS 2012 batch), as the special guest.

The ceremony began with an invocation, followed by a welcome address by Dr Abhay Nirgude, dean, Faculty of Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College. Dr M S Moosabba, principal, Yenepoya Medical College, presented an overview of the institution and its achievements. He highlighted that the college’s clinical facilities are on par with industry standards, equipped with advanced robotic systems capable of performing renal transplants and cardiac surgeries with precision.

In his address, Dr M Vijayakumar, vice chancellor, urged the new batch to embrace multidimensional learning opportunities and emphasised the importance of learning beyond textbooks to become competent and compassionate doctors.

Dr Mohammed Nuhman, alumnus of the 2012 batch, shared his personal journey of fulfilling his medical dream at Yenepoya. He urged the students to make the most of their formative years by embracing every learning opportunity and striving to become the best versions of themselves.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the donning of white coats of the first-year MBBS students, facilitated by the esteemed guests and faculty members, symbolizing their formal induction into the medical profession.

This was followed by the administration of Charaka’s Oath by Dr Habib Rahaman A A, professor and medical superintendent, reminding the students of their duty to serve patients with care, humility, and compassion.

Dr Raghavendra, a parent of a first-year MBBS student, expressed his gratitude to the university for fostering a supportive and inspiring environment and commended the chancellor for his visionary leadership.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Meera Jacob, convener, foundation course committee, followed by the national anthem. The formal ceremony was succeeded by ethnic and cultural day celebrations, where students showcased their diverse cultural heritage through vibrant performances.

The ceremony stood as a memorable celebration of commitment, community, and culture, reinforcing Yenepoya’s mission to nurture competent and compassionate healthcare professionals.

Heads of Departments, unit heads, faculty members, parents, and senior students attended the event, celebrating the beginning of a new chapter in the noble journey of medicine.
