Mangalore: Wanted - A Sentry for Entry Point at Airport!

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Feb 14: We love to take shortcuts - shortcut to quick money, shortcut to success, and even shortcut in traffic. If the vehicles in front of us are stuck in traffic, we take the 'shortcut' through the footpath and honk at the pedestrian for getting in the way, and if there is one way, we don't mind making it a 'two-way' to suit our convenience, as has been happening at Mangalore airport of late.

Over the past several weeks, the Bajpe Airport, which is on the verge of getting international status (if Moily is to be believed), has been seeing serious violation of a traffic rule at its entrance. The airport has only one entry point from the main road for all the vehicles irrespective of which route they come from. It is strictly a ONE-WAY, and no vehicles are allowed from the opposite side. Once a vehicle enters, it must leave through a separate road designated as the exit point, located at another part of the airport.

But lately, there have been a spate of complaints from motorists and passengers about people violating the one-way rule and misusing the entry point, thus causing great incovenience.

Many taxis, auto rickshaws and two-wheelers entering the airport have been dropping the passengers at the toll-free entry and driving the vehicles back through the same route, hence violating the one-way rule. It is an irony that daijiworld camera has caught a two-wheeler ridden by a police official doing this!

According to some motorists, these vehicles have been breaking the rule to avoid paying the toll at the exit. Many passengers are demanding deployment of strict security officials at the entrance arch of the airport to solve the problem.

This practice ought to be nipped in the bud not only because it is a violation of rules, but also because it causes great annoyance to passengers entering the airport, who are many a time in a hurry to catch flights. It even raises security concerns. In India, all the major airports have been provided with tight security, and the airport authorities concerned are expected to ensure that nothing undesirable happens within and around the airport premises.

Mangalore Airport is time and again in the news for the wrong reasons. Stories of problems faced by passengers inside the airport are quite common, and it is not a new sight to see them arguing with the airport staff over delay in flights, luggage restrictions, etc. The news of Kingfisher Airlines denying entry to an ailing child received much public attention.

There has been a lot of talk regarding international status to Mangalore airport. Every time Dr Veerappa Moily makes a visit to the city, he is armed with a new excuse and a new date for the event. Most have stopped believing him, but the concern here is, if people break laws as and when they please, and if the airport has no competent security to check the violation, does it deserve the status of international airport?

It is a miracle that so far no accidents have been reported due to the violation of the one-way rule, but it seems the authorities are waiting for something unwanted to happen.

Do we wait for that day, or raise our voice to make them wake up from their slumber and put a full stop to the uncivil practice of letting vehicles in the No Entry zone?

I am a frequent flyer to Mangalore Airport from Abu Dhabi and arriving 9 times per year since the beginnining of Air India Express Flights to Mangalore. In my experience, I have noticed the Customs personnel and the Officers were very co-operative and if you tell them what you have they trust you and allowed you to go. Delibarately they are not delaying any passengers. Moreover the time taken by the Customs officers to clear the passengers are also very minimal compared to other Airports where I have travelled.

The problem is also with the toll system. There is no electronic time check done. Being suspicious once I checked by using a stop watch. but I was asked to pay the parking even though I reached the gate within 4 minutes 30 seconds.

I Agree with Mr.Christppher, i had a same experience during when i traveled from Dubai to M'lore last year in 10 years... hardly i had electronics things, just a mobile blackberry and a personal laptop(which is allowed to carry)...by mistake i had a glass teapoy in my luggage...which they found in the screening. they(customs) asked me to pay Dirhams to me... but i did not agree.. finally they came to know that i'am not going to pay anything. so they asked me to wait for sometime simply...i said no. cannot wait a single minute...(why should i wait without reason)i made a big scene as over there.... immediately the superwisor came out and he just let me go....so if you don't open u r mouth, they suck money from the poor passengers...please be aware specially in M'lore Airport

In between all these bashing of Mlore airport & customs, I would like to share my experience of recent flying from Auh to Mlore. Surprisingly I found mlore airport facilities better than Abu Dhabi. At Abu Dhabi Gate no 20 at Terminal 1A was so conjested and people were standing because there were no enough seats to sit. Add to it, after final security check area at the waiting lounge there were no toilets. I had to beg with the security to allow my 8 yr old son to go to the toilet which was outside the waiting area. No drinking water facility.

All these at late night (flight was at mid night). Where as at Mlore this time everything was smooth. Even customs were not troubling though I had electronic item which was to be taken back with me. There were no porters, taxi drivers pouncing on you. While returning also the security checks were smooth. Waiting lounge was spacious with enough seats, sophesticated toilets, drinking water, phone etc. First time I felt proud to be a Mangalorean and Indian.

Last Dec when I travelled through AirIndia Express at Manglore Airport my friend was stopped for carrying 4 packs of cigarettes. Officers told that only two packs are allowed. Then I had to speak to them in Hindi and convince them that two packets belong to me. In duty free I pushed them into my friends hand bag. Then they allowed him to go, unwillingly. I told them I could have left one for you but it's injurious to your health. About 4 to 5 officers were putting pressure on my friend as if he has done a big crime. Speak to them boldly else they will sit on our head. After all it's our home town?

Mr. Umesh Mangalore please take note of NRIs contribution to India's economy before passing such comment.
I have great respect for people who are driven enough to pursue their ambition, and go where it takes them. Likewise, I have profound respect for people who are grounded enough to seek those dreams from their home soil. The former vs the latter is more often than not a matter of circumstance with a million other influences.
To say one is in any way better or noble compared to the other is myopic and naive. In times when the world is getting flattened and global sourcing is an accepted norm, we need to get past denial and onto acceptance.
When was the last time you picked up something that did not have a foreign collaboration slapped to it?
From the Colgate that starts the mornings, to the Suzukis-Chevrolets-Volvos that ply you to software parks that cater to a largely foreign customer base, via the HP-IBM-Dell desktops running Microsoft’s Windows, to the Pepsis-Cokes to the Lay’s chips to the iPods, you are more of a global citizen today than ever before.
It is no secret that, given a sliver of chance, very many of these critics and jeerers would only be too happy to pack their suitcases and line up at the embassies.
That notwithstanding, if ‘Foreign Direct Investment’ and ‘Non Resident Indian’ investments are key to India’s growth, and NRIs, apart from re-investing in India do influence the FDI flow as well, we ought to treat them better & we should talk about them with respect.

That's reason we always take a flight from AUH to Mumbay and a connecting flight to manglore needless to clear the customs. Since we have international airport in manglore but still not meeting the basic manners of the customs clearance. When they screening our luggages individually and can see what is inside still they ask " What is that inside? Once i had to take a direct flight to manglore at that time the custom incharge asked me what is inside and you have to open the bag. I said your screening machine showed what it is and still you wanna open the bag? Screen it again. No problem open it but pack me the same way i did then only you are allowed to touch my bag. Without uttering a word he let me go out. Only thing you should be confident and knowing what to talk instead of wasting your valuable time and also in that tired situation. Regarding the road . How on earth to an airport this kind of Zig Zag road is permitted? The Transportation minister should be questiond.

But in Mumbai during my several years of traveling I have no problem with the customs whatsoever. I just walk through the green channel and nobody bothers you. They catch some passengers whom they thing have some dutiable items above the limit. I do not know whether when other flights open to Mangalore I will fly to Mangalore as I feel these customs officers will harass. We work so hard and we have to feed these people by way of bribe. I know the gulf passengers are being harassed and they will not pass through customs without the hafta.

It is sad that this kind of bullying happens in Mangalore Airport. This used to happen in Bombay about 20
years ago and before. Now at Bombay Airport it is a pleasure to walk in and out. For many passengers,if the line is long and if they do not come from middle east they even do not screen the luggage and let you go. Even if they find something the rules apply, like 25,000 Rs per person excluding personal items like laptop, phone, camera etc. It is high time Mangalore Airport Customs get educated to modern times. I appreciate the passengers who do no not give in to these corrupt and uneducated officials.

I too encounterd such a problem - this was on the used ornaments of my wife - The superintent is close by and is watching everything on CCTV
I feel this fotage is erased after the transaction(bribe) is completed. The law should be such that the custom officers should not have access to cctv footage recording device(only replay on monitor) the recording device should be given to another law enforcement agency to view in case of a complaint filed at the airport this to be done within 30 minutes of complaint .

There should be a redressal cell in the customs area manned by another government body with a right to view the cctv footage in case of a complaint. Strict punishment to be given to custom officers misusing powers while on duty. This will teach them a lesson & leave the passenger in peace. On the contrary this will create more revenue to the government as some passengers who realy cheat by paying bribes for huge consignment can be caught by the the other law enforcemnt agency watching the cctv. Some renowned lawyers should draw out a proper law. Fight for a corruption free airpot at Mangalore - Jai Hind
Ram Sena , Bajrang Dal, & all political parties should support this plan.

    I have following suggestions.
    1. There should not be any Fees for off and pick up. Fees should be collected if the vehicle enters the designated parking zone.
    2. Use the electronic ticketing during the entry. We do not need machines like Dubai but at least use machines similar to those which are being used in private buses these days.
    3. There are proposals to increase the customs limit as the present limits are outdated considering the amount one earns today abroad.

No serious comment's on Airport Security, Customs, immigration etc. I suppose they are helping us & India on a relative balance. In this process, as some referred incidents may occur. These have become quite common everywhere, not just India.

One thing I would like to admit, which I have experienced in my 16years in Gulf. Generally, people travelling from Gulf relate stories with their families & friends of how he could get away without issues with Customs Officers. We travel from Gulf to India with a game plan in mind to cheat the Government of India (I am not surprised, everybody is biting their nails by now).

Instead, if we could pay the due charges and utilise the purchased items with dignity, Customs officials would be without job anyways. We , we pay, we take. Complaining about others when we ourselves want to get one up with the Customs official....I dont know??!!!??

I started this email with a different purpose, though ended up with unrelated stories. My suggestion on the traffic offence being highlighted is to install road barriers with springs & spike barriers in the direction of the no entry road and the right direction works fine. Simple scene, Travel right, tyre intact. Travel wrong, buzzz....I am sure having known Mangaloreans for all my life, in the event of a wrongly directed vehicle's tyre's busted, traffic in correct direction will stop to help the wrong direction traffic. This may cause a traffic issue for the right directioners.

Anita, Mangalore/Dubai - your incident brought back sweet memories of an identical nature ... me too, just like you had purchased a brand new Sony 3000W Music System from Dammam (KSA) en-route to India during my annual vacation. As this piece was new in the market, the custom officials (they were all drunkard dirty smelling Biharis - 6 of them accompanied by an aged lady … I believe she was their deputy) knew about this and tried their level best to fleece allied related taxes from me. They wouldn’t budge a bit despite showing them the related papers. (Thankfully my friends in KSA had alerted me about such incidents). Though I had Saudi Riyals hidden inside my socks, they opened my other baggage and checked for all belongings, but to no avail and kept frustrating me for a full 45 minutes plus. They found me a tough nut to crack, hence they offered to keep the system with them in their warehouse for want of Rs. 23,000 and asked me to come back and pay the duties within a week, if I really wanted the system. I was too exasperated with the flight delays and just walked out of their sight ignoring their conniving, pacifying and sugar-coated requests, at times even their shouts completely, and pretended that I just didn’t want the system and that they could keep it as a gift, if they so desired. But they had no choice, I suppose since they were 6 of them. Even if they kept the system in their warehouse, the rule states that they have to dispose custom-related stuffs off to the rightful owner. Worse if the owner didn't turn up they could sell it off to somebody else. But one thing worrying them was if their Manager discovered and would question them, why the owner didn’t claim it, they would be in a lurch and their jobs would be in a jeopardy. Though I showed them that I had Rs. 2,000 for my transportation back home, they were interested in foreign currencies. They tried in vain to extract some currencies from me and eventually gave up and asked me to take my system away

I full agree with Thomas.M'lore/DXB and Anitha/M'lore/A.Dhabi. One thing is very straight at m'lore airport. If you have a big voice to raise against such officers within the baggage area, then you can get out these intruders. I too have faced such issues, but now I have become a noted person and they dare not to stop me. Everytime, I go, they would create issues saying this and that. At last enough-was-enough and when I had to open my mouth, they never thought they would mess up with a wrong person. They would deny writing on your passport if you want to take the stuff back to your country of origin bcos they want bribe. Moreover, these officers are nothing but useless. Its time for them to make money and they intend not to loose this chance. Afterall its an easy income way. I swear, the officers dont even know their own rules and they by-pass the same. I even once has to call the DG of customs M'lore circle, who has to come all the way to the airport to sort out my issue. At the end, he was convicted by his senior for such a nasty act towards the passenger and they even also compensated me. Thus my humble request is to raise the voice, no matter if you have to loose your own respect. This would be the only best way to get rid of rodents.

This is a personal request to the Airport Director who has excelled in every assignment given to him to develop Mangalore airport:

    Dear Sir
Most of Indian airports have easy access to facility without any hindrances and fees. Mangalore airport is constantly developing and evolving facility. With Kannur airport expected to be operational by 2015, we need a decent facility for the citizens of the region and it is a RIGHT of all citizens of this region to demand this basic facility from the concerned authorities. All airports charge a decent fee from the travelers. In case the fees charged cannot meet expenses to provide basic facilities, then kindly review and revise the fees but standardize all basic needs of the traveler.
Let us make Mangalore airport fit to be of International standards.

I had decided this time that i will stand there and fight but not pay a single penny...there has to be an end to this.. when these customs guys were busy trying to llot me they didnt even borther i had my wife next to me with her sister who was pregnant.. when we were leaving from Dubai we were treated so well coz i had a 4 months old baby and a pregnant lady with us... but when i landed in my own country we were treated so badly.. i didnt want any special treatment but all i wanted is not to be harassed for bribe.. that too for no reason..guys we really need to do something here.. if these powerful politicians can be busted by not these guys. We go back to our country with so much excitement but these guys just spoil it all.

The incident mentioned about the Airport duty officers above, reminds me of the a similar incident that happened to me in 2009, when we had taken Music system worth only 1000/Dhs. approx. 17,000/Rs. There is a mafia between the porters & duty officers. When this guy saw that I have the Music system, he had his evil plans work, & took me to a lady officer who immediately asked for a Bribe of Rs. 6000/- without even batting her eyelid. I refused to pay a single rupee to her for that She cooly admits me the rules and advises me a tax will be administered.

I mentioned we are a family of 4 and as per Govt. rules each person is allowed for 25000/Rs exemption. I had carried the receipt of the same & immediately contact the Supntd & he alllowed me to leave. Even though he asked me to leave, this lady officer is persistent in detaining me for paying the duty. I just walked past her & duly initimated the porter to leave our trolley as even after the commendation from the supntd the porter is moving towards the lady officer, this shows the nexus between them. This kind of incidents need to be brought to the attention of appropriate authorities & looked into, which causes distrust & an uncomfortable environment, especially if a single male/female is travelling from a Gulf destination.

A way forward should be planned in order to eradicate the menance from the grass root to have a clean & clear administration. My question is are these Officers not paid well by the Government? Then why do they act in a barbaric way in their attitude towards the passengers from Gulf destination in particular. Are we not the same humans as them ???? We request Daiji to put forth our grievances to the Airport Management and provide a solution.

Guys, 4 days ago i arrived in bajpe airport with my wife after staying 10months in dubai. They scanned my handbag and asked me to see custom officer prior to that he handed me slip written in that Gold and watches. After collecting my luggage i met custom officer, he was quite rude to me . I said i have used gold of my marriage. He was saying gold is gold old or new no matter. I came out without paying anythng to them. I do request authority to train them propery to handle the issues.

What ? Parking Fee is OK. Entry Fee is wrong... If we help somebody to reach Airport by our vehicle we can't them at Entrance as the remaining distance from Entrance to Terminal is UP and curvy. If we take them inside, Entry Fee is must... To Enter Visitors Gallery again Fee. There also in Gallery we can't see flights landing or take off... We don't need Air-conditioned Five Star arrangements. We just go there to or bring our people.

Show me another way of coming back after ping somebody without paying the middlemen !!!! That's why people return in the same route. It is JUSTIFIED...

Stop all these nuisances and money making opportunities for middlemen.

If the authorities at the airport neglect this issue, road users will be used to neglect traffic rules which after a period of time will be difficult to change. If the authorities dont crack down on such violaters, then this will turn into a serious issue someday giving rise to accidents.
Thanks DaijiWorld for highlighting this issue.
I request DaijiWorld to start a signature campaign online and offline and give it to the authorities.

The best solution is to install metal spikes for traffic coming the wrong way as it is seen here in the gulf.

During my last arrival to Bajpe the traffic was jammed in front of the exit gate due to the people using wrong side and turing the vehicles in such a small area but there was not a single police to control the traffic at the time of flight arrival finally taxi drivers were guiding the vehicles and clearing the traffic. It was almost for half hour.

    Sanjeeth,
I had a similar experience when I traveled last year to Mangalore I had a Nokia mobile phone and I had to go through a big hassle with custom officer he wanted me to pay him bribe for bringing the phone which I refused and informed him I have a allowance of IRS25,000 to import worth goods also I requested him to write on my passport if he doesn't allow me take the phone so that I can take the mobile back to Dubai he would write saying that it is not allowed to write on passport. Finally I told him that I will speack to his boss then he let me go.
I am sure many others have similar experience at Mangalore airport.

Yeah, I have seen this happen when i was going to the airport. It is highly dangerous too as due to the steep climb many vehicles are over 60 km/hr to climb on third gear and chances of hitting a vehicle on the opposite side cannot be ruled out

"Mangalore Airport" this place irritates me... each time i have arrived at this airport from Dubai i have had to wait for long coz the of evil intentions of the customs officers. We should be feeling safe when we enter our country but i have never felt that when i arrive in Managalore.. i feel these guys are just waiting there to loot us.. the last time i went i was carrying my DSRL camera which is for my personal use.. the customs officer called me took my camera and started saying i need to pay duty on this .... they didnt borther to see i had my 4 months baby in my arms being cranky .. they made thier own assumptions that the camera price will be Rs 1 Lakh and i have to pay 35% tax that makes it RS 35,000.-.. and they give me a list of rules to read.. at last they realized the cannot fool me and had to let me go.. i have to wait there for almost 45 minutes and listen to thier crap for no reason... am sure like me most of the people expereince this but am not sure why nothing is done about this.. i really urge if Daiji could do something and help us all out here.
