SJEC in collaboration with Mangaluru City Police hold anti-drug awareness programme

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 16: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) Anti-Drug Cell, Department of Chemistry, Student Welfare Group of SJEC in collaboration with Mangaluru City Police, organised an anti-drug awareness programme for 2nd year BE students of SJEC on Wednesday, October 15, in the Kalam Auditorium.

The chief guest for the programme was Mithun H N, DCP, Law and Order, Mangalore City police. Arun Kumar, PSI, Mangaluru Rural police station, Pradeep, police constable, Mangaluru Rural police station, Dr K Jyothi, dean - Student Welfare and Dr Pramila Rita D’Souza, HoD – Chemistry SJEC were the other dignitaries for the programme. The dignitaries were escorted onto the dais by Sheetal Fernandes and Dr Saumya Y M, coordinators of the programme.

The programme commenced with an invocation. Dr K Jyothi, dean - Student Welfare, warmly welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering. In her address, she emphasised that the objective of the programme was to create awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and to empower students to make informed and wise choices - guided by knowledge, courage, and conviction - to contribute towards building a drug-free society. The dignitaries on the dais formally inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

The chief guest Mithun H N, cautioned the students against the initial temptation of experimenting with drugs, often influenced by peers. He explained that what may begin as casual use can soon turn into a harmful habit and, eventually, lead one down the dangerous path of becoming a peddler. He urged the students to stay strong, avoid falling victim to such influences, focus on their studies, and work towards building a bright and successful future.

Arun and Pradeep spoke about the growing threats of cybercrime and how easily individuals can fall prey to online scams. They explained that by paying even a small amount or clicking on suspicious links, cybercriminals can gain access to personal information and gradually trap victims, leading to severe financial loss. They urged students to always stay alert and never become victims or perpetrators of such crimes, emphasising that engaging in activities harmful to society can have serious consequences. Once a police complaint is registered under an individual’s name, it can become difficult to obtain government jobs, passports, or visas in the future. Hence, students must act responsibly, safeguard their data, and immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police department.

The prize distribution ceremony was conducted for the winners of the reel-making competition organised as part of the event.

The DCP felicitated the students and presented the prizes, appreciating their creativity, awareness, and active participation in promoting a drug-free and safe society.

The programme was concluded by giving a memento to all the dignitaries as a token of gratitude.

The vote of thanks was rendered by Sheetal Fernandes, coordinator of the programme of SJEC.
