Karkala, Oct 7: The inauguration and training programme of the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit, held at the auditorium of Christ King Pre-University College, Karkala.
Dr Suresh Rai K, principal of Manjunath Pai Memorial College, Karkala, inaugurated the new NSS unit by lighting the lamp. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Through the National Service Scheme, students can achieve holistic personality development. NSS helps us to understand ourselves. As human beings, we should live with a sense of ‘we’ instead of just ‘I’.”
Dr Gananath Shetty Ekkaru, retired state officer of the NSS and a renowned folk scholar, who was the chief guest, said, “Qualitative changes in personality contribute to human resource development, and such development is possible through NSS.”




Another guest, Karkala circle police inspector Manjappa D R, said, “NSS is an excellent platform for students to shape their personalities. It helps them understand right and wrong. With strong willpower and hard work, one can achieve anything.”
Dr Peter Fernandes, a member of the Crest King Education Trust, in his presidential address, said, “When the youth actively participate in nation-building, India can become a global leader. When students engage more in extracurricular activities, their awareness and maturity increase. The National Service Scheme greatly helps in enhancing life skills among students.”
The college principal, Lakshminarayana Kamath, delivered the introductory speech. NSS students presented short skits on female foeticide and drug abuse awareness. Dr Gananath Shetty Ekkaru also conducted a training session for the students.
NSS assistant coordinator Deepak welcomed the gathering, and NSS programme officer Sukanya Jain proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Kannada lecturer Umesh Bellippady.
Vice principal Dr Prakash Bhat, headmaster of the primary section Rudolf Kishore Lobo, and high school headmistress Josna Snehalatha and others were present on the occasion.
