9 killed, over 20 injured as lorry rams into Ganesh immersion procession in Hassan

Hassan, Sep 13: In a tragic incident, at least nine people lost their lives and more than 20 others sustained injuries after a lorry rammed into a Ganesh immersion procession at Mosale Hosahalli in Hassan taluk on Friday night.

The procession was moving along National Highway 373 when a canter lorry, while trying to avoid a bike that suddenly crossed its path, lost control. In an attempt to avert the collision, the driver swerved, causing the lorry to cross the road divider and plough into the crowd.

The impact claimed the lives of nine people on the spot, while over 20 others suffered serious injuries. The injured were rushed to HIMS Hospital in Hassan, where several are reported to be in critical condition.

MP Shreyas Patel, who visited the spot, termed the incident ‘a tragic event’. He said, “This is an unfortunate incident. We have received information that several lives have been lost. Such an incident should never have happened. The injured have been admitted to hospital. The exact cause will be known after a thorough investigation.”

MLA H D Revanna also visited the location and inspected the situation.
