New Delhi, Jul 30: In a major push towards transforming the national capital into one of the cleanest cities in India, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday unveiled the ambitious 'Delhi freedom from garbage' campaign, offering hefty cash rewards to top-performing areas in terms of cleanliness.

Addressing a preparatory meeting for the drive, CM Gupta announced that the best-performing assembly constituency will be awarded a whopping Rs 1 crore. Additionally, the cleanest ward will receive Rs 50 lac, and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) topping the charts will bag Rs 25 lac, Rs 15 lac, and Rs 10 lac for the first, second, and third positions, respectively.

The campaign, set to run from August 1 to 31, is aimed at fostering community participation in civic upkeep. Participants are required to upload before-and-after images of cleaned areas on a specially designated portal, based on which assessments and disbursal of funds will be carried out.

“To support this massive cleanliness initiative, Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD),” Gupta stated, assuring full backing from the state administration.

Highlighting inter-agency coordination, she said, “For the first time in Delhi’s history, MCD, PWD, Delhi Police, and other departments are working in sync. We are writing a golden chapter under the motto — Meri Dilli, Meri Zimmedari (My Delhi, My Responsibility).”

The campaign will focus initially on clearing accumulated waste in government schools, hospitals, and offices over the first two days. Every weekend, targeted drives will be carried out in unauthorized colonies and JJ clusters.

Furthermore, special clean-up operations are planned along the Yamuna ghats on August 14, 21, and 28, while the Ring Road will be spruced up on August 29 and 31.

Taking a swipe at the former AAP government, CM Gupta remarked that the previous regime had tarnished Delhi’s image. “Under the leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, a positive and united front is now working to resolve Delhi’s issues — starting with the menace of garbage,” she asserted.

The initiative has sparked enthusiasm among residents and RWAs, who see it as an opportunity to not only beautify their neighborhoods but also secure funding for local development.
