Udupi, July 22: In a breakthrough in the PWD Quarters robbery case, Udupi Town police have arrested two inter-state house burglars and recovered stolen silver, gold, and cash worth over Rs 86,000.

The arrests were made under the guidance of Udupi district superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, IPS. The investigation team was led by additional SP Sudhakar Naik, DySP Prabhu D T, Udupi town inspector Manjunath Badiger, and PSIs Bharatesh Kankanawadi and Eranna Shiragumpi, along with their staff.

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Kushal H R, a resident of PWD Quarters, Mission Compound. The theft reportedly occurred between 6:00 pm on July 19 and 7:00 am on July 20, when unknown persons gained entry into the complainant’s residence by removing screws from the door latch and unlocking the main door. They accessed the bedroom, took a key hidden in a sewing machine, and opened the cupboard to steal several silver ornaments and cash.

During the investigation, police analyzed CCTV footage from the vicinity near NH-66 and identified the suspects. A swift operation led to the arrest of two individuals: Bangad alias Bangu alias Ramesh Jawan Singh (37), and Kaliya alias Kalu (25), both residents of Kushki taluk, Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh.

From the accused, police recovered silver ornaments including anklets, waist belts, bangles, toe rings, waist chains, silver plates, kadas, and bracelets — weighing a total of 681.830 grams and valued at Rs 80,970 — along with 470 milligrams of gold worth Rs 4,250 and Rs 1,700 in cash.

The investigation revealed that both accused were involved in previous theft cases. Ramesh has 11 pending theft cases in another state, while Kalu is connected to three cases in Udupi. They are known to target houses primarily on weekends.

The accused have been produced before the court, and police are continuing efforts to apprehend another suspect who is currently absconding.
