Mangaluru, Jul 21: Symproza Philomena Gladys Sequeira, popularly known in Konkani literary circles as Gladys Rego, passed away on Monday, July 21.
Born in Bendur, Mangaluru in 1945, Gladys Rego was a prolific writer and a towering figure in Konkani literature. Her literary contributions include four volumes of short stories in Konkani, six works on folklore, and two story collections. In total, she authored 27 books encompassing short stories, folk literature, biography, and research.

She also founded her own publishing agency, ‘Akash Prakashan’, through which she promoted Konkani literature and culture. Apart from her literary pursuits, she was an avid collector of stamps, coins, currencies, and postcards — hobbies that earned her appreciation from the public.
She was a member of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and a recipient of the Daiji Dubai and Sandesha Awards. She also published several Konkani books and rendered her services to the St Aloysius Konkani Institute.
