Bantwal, Jul 20: A shocking incident was reported from the peaceful town of Bantwal on Saturday evening, where a sub-inspector (SI) of the Bantwal Rural police station, Keerappa (54), allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself.

Originally from Uttara Kannada, the officer had been transferred from Sirsi police station to Bantwal about five months ago. While his family continued to reside in Uttara Kannada, he was staying alone in a rented house in Bantwal. The house belonged to a local gold merchant.

On Saturday morning, when the SI failed to report for duty and did not respond to phone calls, his colleagues grew suspicious. In the evening, they visited his rented house and found the door locked from inside. Despite repeated knocks and calls, there was no response. When they peeped through the window, they found him hanging inside the room.

The exact reason for the suicide is not yet known. Additional superintendent of police visited the spot and took stock of the situation.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway. The sudden death has left his colleagues in deep shock.
