Sunitha Kumar Memorial Sports Scholarship awards, book release ceremonies held at St Agnes College

Mangaluru, July 15: St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, hosted a memorable programme marking the Sunitha Kumar Memorial Sports Scholarship Awards and a book release ceremony on July 10 at the seminar hall, Mother Aloysia Centenary Block.

The programme was graced by Dr Vinitha Shenava from Texas, United States of America. In her address, Dr Shenava fondly remembered her mother, the late Sunitha Kumar, an alumna of the college who had a deep love for sports. She shared that, as Sunitha’s children, they wished to begin this initiative at her alma mater to support and encourage student athletes.

Principal Sr Dr M Venissa A C welcomed the gathering and expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sanjeev, Shifali Shetty and Dr Shenava for instituting the scholarship. She described it as “a living legacy” that would inspire and benefit generations of students.

The recipients of the Sunitha Kumar Memorial Sports Scholarship were Diksha D Karkera, a district and state-level wrestler; Udith Rai, a national and international throwball player; and Prapti, a district and state-level athlete in table tennis, volleyball, discus throw, shot put, javelin throw, and throwball.

The event also highlighted St Agnes College’s enduring commitment to its students, demonstrated through its robust scholarship programme that annually awards scholarships to 525 students, totalling over Rs 29,36,500 to date. This significant investment nurtures dreams, sustains academic journeys, and brightens futures, reflecting the institution’s belief in every student’s potential regardless of financial background. These merit-based and need-based scholarships empower students to excel and contribute meaningfully to society, exemplifying the college’s philanthropic spirit and dedication to excellence and inclusion.

The event also featured the release of books authored by faculty members Dr Sabina D'Souza, Chethana K and Anitha. An edited volume of research papers presented at the international conference on Fostering Sustainability, organised by the departments of political science and economics on February 25, was also released. All these publications will soon be available on Amazon, Flipkart, and other leading online platforms.
