Udupi: Dispute over extra pani puri leads to clash at Malpe beach; cross-complaints filed

Udupi, Jun 11: A seemingly minor disagreement over an extra pani puri escalated into a physical altercation between a group of tourists from Mandya district and local vendors near Malpe beach on the night of June 10 around 8:30 pm.

According to police, the argument began at a roadside pani puri stall when the tourists demanded an additional pani puri, which led to a verbal spat with the vendor. The disagreement soon turned into a scuffle, with both parties reportedly assaulting each other.

Following the incident, both sides lodged complaints at the Malpe police station. As a result, two cross FIRs have been registered—Crime No. 71/2025 under Sections 189(2), 191(2), 191(3), 115(2), 118(1), 352, 351(2), and 190 of the BNS; and Crime No. 72/2025 under the same sections.

The accused in the first case have been identified as Sudeep, Sampath, Puneeth, Mahesh, Kanna Vaiji, and Aravind. The accused in the second case are Ramesh, Monu, and Vinod. All individuals involved have been taken into custody for further investigation.

Police have confirmed that both cases are being treated as counter-cases and have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the evidence. Authorities have urged the public and tourists to maintain calm and avoid such incidents in the future, especially in popular tourist areas.

Udupi, Jun 11: A street clash broke out between two groups of youths near Malpe late in the evening on Tuesday, causing panic among local residents. The altercation involved youths attacking each other with bats, escalating tensions in the area.

According to sources, the groups had been harbouring mutual resentment for several days. One group reportedly comprised local youths, while the other included migrants. The confrontation, which had been simmering, finally erupted into violence on the street, disturbing the peace in the locality.

The late-night brawl has raised serious concerns among residents, who have demanded strict action against those involved to prevent such incidents in the future.
