Mangaluru, May 19: An altercation broke out among undertrial inmates at the Mangaluru District Jail on the evening of May 19, leading to property damage and injury to one prisoner. Authorities have filed a police complaint and initiated legal proceedings against those involved.
The incident occurred at around 6:40 pm in the quarantine cell section of the jail, where a few undertrial inmatesreportedly stood near the office area and began shouting at inmates lodged in “B” barrack, allegedly because they felt the latter were staring at them. This quickly escalated into a heated exchange of abusive language and loud shouting from both sides.

In the midst of the chaos, the inmates reportedly smashed cement blocks, throwing broken pieces across the area. In a more serious development, some undertrial prisoners from the “B” barrack allegedly forced open the inner gate and proceeded to the Judicial Wing office, where they smashed the glass panel on the door with their hands, causing visible damage.
During this commotion, one undertrial inmate sustained a bleeding injury on his leg, officials confirmed.
Superintendent of Mangaluru district jail has lodged a formal complaint with the Barke police station, requesting that appropriate legal action be taken against the inmates involved in the disturbance.
Jail authorities are currently investigating the matter, and security in the affected areas has been tightened to prevent further incidents.
