Mangaluru: Free travel for women in govt buses - Private operators fear incurring huge losses

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (SS)

Mangaluru, Jun 2: With the government announcing free travel for women in government buses, private bus operators in the Karavali belt are likely to feel the burden. The fleet of buses operated by the private operators is as much in number or more than the government-run buses. When the guarantee scheme of the government comes into effect, the profitability of the private bus operators is likely to be affected.

Members of the Dakshina Kannada district City Bus Owners Association have decided to call on chief minister Siddaramaiah to impress upon him the need to provide relief in the form of diesel subsidy among other measures.

In Dakshina Kannada district headquarters of Mangaluru, 328 private buses are run by private operators and 68 buses are operated on a contract carriage basis in the rural areas. There are 400 private buses that do not have a number and here the KSRTC is in direct competition with private bus operators.

If travel for women becomes free in government-run buses then the private bus operators feel that women who constitute a major source of revenue for them will get into government buses and thus private buses will have to operate without women affecting their profitability in the process.

Currently, there are more than 1,000 city buses run by private operators. All women are likely to board government buses if free travel for them is introduced in such buses.

Former minister Sunil Kumar in a tweet had drawn the attention of the government to the likely losses that the private bus operators are likely to incur if free travel for women in government buses is introduced.

Jayasheela Adyanthaya, president of Dakshina Kannada district City Bus Owners Association said he would submit a memorandum to the chief minister requesting him to provide relief to private bus operators in the form of making available diesel at subsidised prices.

First ask private bus drivers to stop driving like madcaps!! They drive as if the entire road belongs to them. They stop in the middle of the road and obstruct traffic. They honk in such a manner that your ear drums go for a toss!! Private bus drivers need to be taught road discipline!!

While agreeing that the city busses played a major role in DK and Udupi district in terms of convinient transportation, sadly they are run by a greedy mafia. Government buses were never encouraged and smothered down whenever these buses plied their routes. Small example of the government green city buses that were introduced in Udupi. They were neat, clean and also had concessions for the senior citizens. People benefitted and made use of them. Over a period of time, the frequency of these green buses dwindled and were reduced to 2 trips a day at odd hours. The pressure behind the government bus closure is the city and private buses. Another private bus mafia is the Udupi/ Mangalore to Bangalore privatised to the core.

All good, But there are only a few government buses here and to claim subsidy, first reduce bus / auto fare increased 50 % to cover covid lockdown losses to reduce inflation and so common man is relieved of additional burden as Covid is over more than year now and bus operators have mostly recovered their losses through this extra fares ?

The government is expected to deliver the guarantees. The private buses charge 50% more than public buses. Now they can charge 90% and recoup the cost. Earlier this used to be the monopoly of private buses. Its high time the citizens get the benefit.

What blow are you even talking about? Almost 90% of the buses are not effected by this scheme as there's just 2-5 ksrtc city buses in the city. If you are feeling bad then buy them diesel with your salary. They had thrice increased the fair saying it as temporary but it became permanent so who is suffering here?
