Karnataka shocker: Couple fined Rs 6 lacs for inter-caste marriage, face boycott

Chamarajanagar, Mar 5 (IANS): In a shocking development in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar district, a couple was fined and faced a boycott in their village for their inter-caste marriage.

The incident had taken place at Kunagalli village in Kollegal taluk in the district. According to police, the couple got married five years ago but the villagers came to know about their different castes only recently.

The villagers had fined the couple Rs 6 lacs and boycotted them in the village. The couple were not able to take the humiliation and filed a complaint with police in Kollegal on March 1.

Govindaraju, belonging to the Uppara Setty community, had fallen in love with Shwetha, from Mandya, belonging to the Scheduled Castes. When they decided to get married, the families of the boy and the girl agreed without opposition and their marriage was solemnised in the sub-registrar's office.

Govindaraju settled in Malavalli, but often came to visit his parents, along with his wife, in Kunagalli. When the couple came there last month, Shwetha, talking to her neighbour, had disclosed that she is a Dalit.

The matter reached the elders of the village and they held a meeting on February 23. They called the parents of the couple and imposed a Rs 3 lacs fine on them and asked them to pay the fine by March 1.

After the couple had lodged a complaint with police against 12 persons of the village in this connection, the elders, after coming to know about the complaint, increased the fine amount to Rs 6 lacs and boycotted Govindaraju's family from the village.

The villagers have sent the family out of the village and passed a diktat that they should not purchase rations, vegetables, milk, and water from the village.

The authorities have taken up the investigation.

Hindutva yes, Hindu Religion never existed , But a political party to rule brought up a issue regarding Hindu religion to garner votes by lure, force and whatever. GOD up above observes Individuals for their deeds on this Earth and he will truly decide.

its a sad & tragic story repeating itself for centuries. from the vedic period to 21st century this cast system unique to hindu religion has been main stumbling bloc for development of a nation.the britishers 1st time addressed the problem by giving universal education.. then on CONGRESS govt tried solve by giving them job security . but the atrocities of upper casts are continuing even for this day & too graphic to describe. RSS/BJP could've done plenty here but they do it only to get votes then conveniently forget.RSS opposition for job security for SC/ST is no secret & BJP being extension of RSS just obeys orders from its master.

An inter-caste couple was killed in Haryana, and a professor in Mumbai, hailing from that Haryana village was asked about his opinion. People thought, being an enlightened person, his view might be opposed to such killing. But, he said, villagers had done the right thing, because people have to obey the local customs !! A Brahmin boy in Mumbai fell in love with a SC girl and she also liked him, but she knew marriage was not possible. His father was a temple priest in UP. Though, girl had fear, he took her to his father in UP and told him that he wanted to marry the girl and said she belonged to upper caste. Hearing this, the girl told his father "Uncle, I belong to SC and I do not wish to get into sacred marriage by lying". Hearing this that priest told the girl "Daughter, you are really a Brahmin and my son is a SC" and got them married with his blessing. In India, people have varying view on this inter-caste marriage.
