Dubai, Sep 21: Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, younger brother of Dubai’s Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Sheikh Ahmed, Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, died on Monday, September 21, according to Gulf News.

The Ruler’s Court announced that the mourning period would begin immediately, with flags to be flown at half-mast across the emirate.

Sheikh Mohammed, who is also the UAE’s Vice President and Prime Minister, paid tribute to his younger brother in a post on X, praying for his mercy and a place in Paradise.

“May Allah have mercy on Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. May Allah have mercy on you, my brother,” Sheikh Mohammed wrote. He added that although Sheikh Ahmed was no longer with them, he would continue to remain in their prayers and hearts.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, also mourned the death of his uncle and prayed for his forgiveness and mercy.

Born in 1950, Sheikh Ahmed was the youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, former Ruler of Dubai. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and later joined Dubai’s Central Military Command, eventually becoming its Commander-in-Chief.

He also served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and held senior positions associated with Dubai’s security establishment.

Sheikh Ahmed was also associated with business, real estate and sports interests in Dubai, including A.R.M. Holding and the Dubai Real Estate Centre.
