Mangaluru/Udupi: No food testing laboratories exist in coastal districts

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (MS)

Mangaluru/Udupi, Feb 17: It is shocking to note that the coastal districts, which dish out the most delicious seafood, does not have a single food and water analysis laboratory.

More than 140 students of a private nursing college at Shaktinagar were admitted to hospitals in the city recently on Monday, February 6, due to food poisoning. The food consumed by them was sent to a food and water analysis laboratory in Bengaluru. According to official sources, the report might take at least some time to arrive.

According to food safety rules, before any food is released into the market or before any food, hotel or catering industry begins, they need to get certification from the food safety department. This needs a food and water anlysis laboratory that is recognised by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratory or NAAB.

In Karnataka there are only four food and water analysis laboratories in Mysuru, Bengaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad and Belagavi. Though there is a proposal to begin one such laboratory for every district, the same has not been given much importance so far.

In addition, there is only one officer for food safety inspection in Dakshina Kannada district. In addition to giving permission to the food industry and the units, every responsibility has to be borne by him. At the taluk level this responsibility needs to be looked after by THOs.

Sadly Bangalore has always been a SEAT and Mangalore and Udupi a FOOTSTOOL! All developments that the Chief Ministers talk about are for Bangalore only. Whereas most taxes come from other areas and no basic infrastructure, amenities, or developments are considered. They are just announced to the poor people who do not keep statistics of our loud mouth people in authority starting from the PM. There is a saying in English, if you want to build a better body, work at it. Dont simply dream about it! Mangalore and Udupi are only visited by the PM and his chamchas for votes and emphasis on Hinduvta etc. Development and basic amenities take a back seat because the people too are brain washed into seeking power and getting a khushi high paid job in politics having to do nothing. Most of them aspire to go abroad to Muslim or Christian countries as they see on Youtube the good countries and their development and infrastructure and jobs and salaries and living standards and whereas we are wondering why Mangalore and Udupi does not have a single Food & Water Analysis & Control Authority or at least an EPA! There are so many illegal food joints in Udupi on the streets, who cares if they have a Licence to operate. The Police is simply paying attention to drive the politicians around as though only the politicians are paying them salaries and not the public by means of the high taxes each and every citizen of Mangalore and Udupi are paying from Liquor 28% to eating in Restaurants 2.5%. ONE CAN ONLY EXPECT A CHANGE IF ONE CAN BE THE CHANGE!

Even if they exist what is transparency in its report as even our courts give biased verdicts or doesn’t deal with the complaint in its subject matter but hails govt’s choice to handle the matter or forms 5 panel judges of favouring the govt. This is the true BJP democracy at present.
