Udupi: Kannada will get top priority, second spot for Tulu language sought - Sunil Kumar

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Feb 8: “Kannada language will be given priority in the state”, said Minister for Kannada and Culture Sunil Kumar here today.

“We cannot think of any other language other than Kannada. The activities of Tulu will always go hand-in-hand with that of Kannada in the homeland. We are not asking for a separate Tulunadu but we are asking for a second spot for the Tulu language,” he said.

“Kannada is being given the highest position and respect. There is a similar process of according priority in other states as well. A committee has been  formed to discuss the pros and cons after receiving several appeals for giving Tulu the second position. The government will take a decision on the basis of the report from the committee,” the minister said.

Urdu language is spoken by over 10% of the population in Karnataka, which is the second closest to Kannada. This amounts to more than 5 million people. This is followed by Telugu (3.5 million) and Tamil (2 million) which is spoken by large population in Bangalore and border districts. Tulu is spoken by less by around 1.5 million in Karnataka and is the fifth largest in the order. Karnataka has only one official language till now. Why would Tulu get to jump the queue ahead of other? Looks like an election gimmick.

English is spoken by more than 1.5 crore people. Will you make it second language? Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Konkani have their statehood and are being protected by respective states. Tulu is abandoned language and needs to get state recognition. We all should stand in support of this move.

Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam speakers are migrants from neighbouring states. At least half of the Urdu speakers are migrants from Kadapa in AP and other places. Great majority of these people migrated and settled after the formation of Karnataka and development of Bangalore. Marathi and Konkanis had been living in Karnataka before the formation of the state, long before independence. Tulu, Beary and Kodavas are the natives of Karnataka.

Konkani has been recognised and included in the 8th schedule of the constitution. It is now the official language of Goa and a major language of UK Dist. in Karnataka.

YES Mr. Minister, BUT DO NOT n=NEGLECT KONKANI which has a national status and recognized in the Constitution. Your effortt to get Tulu a second spot in KT is laudable, but first get it recognized in the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution which has already included Konkani and Konkani is the official language of Goa, as Kannada is of Karnataka. Thank you.

Agree with your comment .. What is required is inclusion of Tulu in the 8th schedule of the constitution .. Under the Karnataka state governments since formation of statehood on linguistic basis ..Tulu has been declared as a vulnerable language by UNESCO . This shows that the previous govts have ignored Tulu and its development.

Definitely not Sunil Kumar. These thugs act as if they are protector of hindus but infact they are doing more damage. Similarly we people should protect tulu language and not these bloody politicians.
