United Nations, May 9 (IANS) The 4th UN summit of the Least Developed Countries starts Monday in Istanbul, and would focus on ending poverty, Prensa Latina reported.
The summit would seek to find measures to achieve economic self-sufficiency, end poverty, and create decent jobs, according to a UN statement.
The Least Developed Countries group was created in 1971, and since then has organised four summits. Its membership has grown to 48 countries, with 33 in Africa, 14 in Asia and one in the Caribbean, Haiti.
The summit agenda includes evaluation of a 10-year action plan approved in the previous summit held in Brussels in 2001, and the adoption of new measures and strategies for sustainable development over the next 10 years.
