Mangaluru: Flex at Ladyhill junction that read 'Narayana Guru Circle' removed

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 24: At a time when the issue of renaming of Ladyhill circle has courted controversy, a flex announcing the name of the circle as 'Brahmashree Narayana Guru Circle' with a flag of Bajrang Dal atop the flex, was found erected at the circle on Wednesday September 23 evening. This gave rise to apprehension for some time.

As of now, a debate is on, both for and against the proposal to rename the circle. The city corporation has not taken any stand on the issue. Therefore, the police, being aware of the sensitive nature of the issue, cleared the flex.

Leaders Catholic Sabha had reminded the city mayor and corporation commissioner about the historical significance of the circle's name, and sentiments attached therein. They had said that the history of the circle dates back to 1885 and the circle and the locality have been known with the name, Ladyhill, since over a century.

The city corporation council had proposed to include renaming of the circle in the agenda of its session held on September 22, but decided to defer the issue in view of an array of objections and requests received from various sections of the society against renaming the circle.

Several private bus operators have expressed their support for changing the name of the circle. A few of them have started displaying the name, Narayana Guru circle, in their boards showing destinations.

Renaming is a very sensitive subject, which can trigger unrest, arouse passion in our society !!! There are pros and cons, for every existing landmarks.... reminds us of our past legacy, which could be painfully, humiliating or perhaps give us joy and a sense of positivity, for the present generation. In Mumbai, almost all of our colonial names, monuments, institutions, have been erased, replaced by prominent local nationalist personalities !!!

Association which ask for renaming road , authority has to ask them to adopt that road by depositing 2crores, before renaming at least give a test for 2 years each side opposition and pro to change, who emerges good give their name. Example before naming mulki sundram shetty road collect money from that association and opposition abt 2 crores each put toss and give left side of road and right of road stretch of 5 km to maintain for two years both association, whoever does good give their in this case SAC vs sundram, that way competition builds and road will be good. This should include drainage as well.

How is Bajarang Dal relevant to Sri Narayan Guru ?

Catholic Sabha, is an institution established comprising of representatives from Catholic community. The institution meets whenever any problems faced by the community to access/discuss the matter. Why should it not be worried about Lady Hill circle renaming ? About eliminating the importance of an education attached to the junction ?

What is there at the place related to Sri Narayan Guru ? Why BD wants the name to be given to that very circle ? Why not somewhere else/some other place ? There are several school/colleges run by Hindu organizations. Why not a circle close to one of those school/colleges be named after Sri Nayayan Guru ? I.e. the circle close to Ram Bhavan Complex. There are three famous schools in that vicinity.

This looks like an opportunistic nature of the people. When education was lagging, requested the missionaries to work for them, at their request schools were built people were served without any discrimination irrespective of language, colour and religion. Anyone could come and get educated. Now that the community and city is developed, stabbing the same name and organization that contributed to education. This is really sad.

I fully agree with the explanation attributed by the people. Any historical significance or sentiments should be given due importance and respect.
Possibly in due course of time BJP will disappear and some new popular front will emerge and they will put forward their own thoughts and consider making many name changes and there could be rift right through India’s history. So let us concentrate more on development, equality, peaceful co-existence to benefit ourselves from education, science & technology, medical progress etc.
Please do not divide ourselves meaning less name changes. History will remain and cannot be erased.

Mark my words. With the current leadership in Taluk,, this name change may happen overnight one day, when all have forgotten about it. All this is happening because of a week opposition. There are no good leaders in Mluru opposition who would fight it out. Eventually Cong may call for a huge protest that will have a turn around of 20 people max. The BJP knows that Congress is a just a bunch of online warriors. So in my view, its better to forget fighting over this and just move on. Ladyhill will remain in your hearts. Even if they change, it may take a decade or 2 for the real new name to be in vogue,

Forgetting about a section of Christians submitting a memorandum separately, I think all mangaloreans who do not care for the religion should come forward and demand keeping the names intact.

    my suggestion:
Make a fountain and beautiful circle in Ladyhill circle. Engrave a writing as below.
