Mangaluru: Former students of Ladyhill Institutions oppose renaming of junction

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru
With Inputs from Media Release

Mangaluru, Sep 20: The former students and parents of Ladyhill Institutions are sending letters to Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) mayor, commissioner, deputy commissioner, MLA and others objecting strongly to the resolution to be passed by the MCC to rename the Ladyhill Circle to Sri Narayana Guru Circle. They have stated that the "changing of status quo will wound the feelings of lacs of students who have crossed the portals of their beloved Alma mater, hence it is obligatory to retain the name as Ladyhill Circle." The management, staff and students too have strongly objected to the same proposal and submitted their memorandum to authorities concerned.

"Ladyhill has its own historical significance. The Apostolic Carmel Sisters started its Mission of Education in 1870 in Mangaluru. The local persons, specially the GSB community requested them to open a school for their girls in Dongarakeri, Urwa. Hence the Ladyhill Victoria Girls High School was started in 1885. A large number of girls are being educated in the said school since then and are contributing much to the society in different fields. The term Ladyhill assumes its importance mainly for the reasons that girl children are provided holistic education, besides the place being a hilly area," the former students of the Institution stated in a media release.

As a mark of respect for the women empowerment, everybody called the area as 'Ladyhill'. Since then, this place is called Ladyhill Junction/Ladyhill Circle. Hence the historical significance of 135 years of Ladyhill cannot be changed, they stated.

"Besides, the very name ‘Ladyhill’ adds strength and support to the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme of our honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji as Ladyhill educational institutions cater to the education of girls. It will be a great disappointment to the thousands of girls/women who have studied in these institutions if the name is changed and their feelings of nationalism will be shattered," they said.

"In the said area a large number of ex-students reside. The proposed change will hurt their feelings of attachment to Ladyhill institutions as it will twist the history of the place. Earlier in the year 2003 and in the year 2018, attempts were made to change the name of Ladyhill Junction but because of the objections raised by the public, the said proposal was dropped. Hence it is unfair to change the name of the circle even now.

"The appeal of the ex-students, PTA and well wishers of Ladyhill institutions is to maintain the status quo and they place on record their objection to change Lady Circle to Sri Narayana Guru Circle.

"It is the opinion of likeminded people that instead of renaming circles, roads etc, MCC and our political leaders could concentrate on developmental projects in making Mangaluru a smart city in reality," the ex-students said.

    From
    Sukumar Talpady,
    “Jayanth Sadan”
    Dwaraka Nagar,
    Kottara, Mangaluru 575006.

    To
    The Hon.Mayor,
    City Corporation,
    Mangaluru. 575003.
    Sir
Sub: Proposal to rename “Lady Hill Circle” as Sree Narayana Guru Circle.
    ------------------------------------------------------
It is understood that the Hon. Members of Mangaluru City Corporation have already passed resolution to rename the more than 150 years old Lady Hill Circle in Mangaluru City as Sree Narayana Guru Circle. We the citizens of Mangaluru especially of North Part of this City wish to lodge their protest and at the same time request you to drop this ill advised proposal. The name Lady Hill is internationally known, and it is named so since 1885, and it is absolutely non-controversial also. We do not have an objection for the name Sree Narayana Guru, the well known social reformer. But what we suggest is any Other unnamed circle in Mangaluru City, say the circle near Urwa Market, Mangaluru which is near to the Lady Hill Circle, may be developed beautifully and named after this Hon.Guruji. The procession from Sree Gokarnanath Temple, during Navarathri Times, goes to Urwa Market area also and therefore we suggest that circle may be named after him. Changing the name of Lady Hill Circle really hurts the sentiments of old students of educational institutions which are nearby and we understand that they too are lodging their protest with you. The change of name of St.Aloysius College Road, to Mulky Sundar Ram Shetty could be tolerated to some extent, because that road was always known as Light House Hill Road only. But here in the case Lady Hill is not so and it is going to hurt the feeling of the citizens.

When will India realize that it's because of the divide and rule policy that we were enslaved by the British. And now these politician's are trying to just do the same. They want people to fight amongst each other based on religion so that during elections they can claim they r doing so much for Hindu community. Damn these guys . Let them gurantee that if whole of India is a Hindu again they won't discriminate based on caste.. I challenge these politician's if they really care for the people of Mangalore solve our problems. Why do our youth need to get out of Mangalore to earn, generate employment in Mangalore, provide us good health care in government hospitals , provide good air water and roads. These guys can't do that instead they want to change name of places. Fools I say.

But people's memory will not let them call it otherwise. These guys are ao insecure, they have destroyed the economy, destroyed the cultural fabric of the society, creating enemity between the people, they have destroyed jobs and lousy people have everyone else except themselves to blame. Look at social media and the mood of the people. This brainwashing eye washing party is destined to doomsday in the next election. All of their lies are in the open. So let us not break our heads for name changes. Thier days itself are numbered.

It's time MCC stops this nonsense of Name Changing and focus on the actual development work for which they were elected for. There's so much of work that needs to be done. It's shows their lack of commitment and maturity to work for the good of the society as a whole.

Every name wherever given was given for a memory purpose. I think the present generation should respect it and focus on the immediate needed issues during these pandemic time.

FOCUSING ON CHANGING OF NAME IS NOT THE NEEDED REQUIREMENT NOW.
FOCUS ON YOUR JOB & WORK NEEDED TO BE DONE., ..SHOW THAT YOU ARE MATURE ENOUGH TO DO IT .

In India people go by landmarks and not street numbers to find a place. Ladyhill like lighthouse hill is a well known landmark. More than ten years ago I was in Bangalore for couple of days. I wanted to go to a place on Richmond Road which I realized was now called in the map as Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road. Nothing wrong with that. But none of the Auto drivers knew whare it was. They kep asking their colleagues and then came to me asking questions ranging from "Are you sure it is in Bangalore" to "Can you say it in Kannada?". Then I told them it used to be called Richmond Road and then they all said "Why didn't you say so at first??". Old habits will not die especially where maps and street numbers do not count.

Dear, your nation did not exist when Ladyhill Victoria Girls School was established. Have some humility to accept the positive contribution of this institution to Mangalore for over a century. Every great nation recognizes and pays tribute to those who came before them and contributed positively.

Does not matter if they were Persians/ Arabs/ Europeans, they are no more, but those who came out of Ladyhill educated as better citizens, more productive citizens were Indians! Respect is earned.

Not forced on someone. See how Mahatma inspired. Today you can find roads, streets, circles and statues dedicated to him in Europe, Australia and Africa. Your Narayana Guru can take over any of the many unnamed and undeveloped circles / holes in this city (and make it better). Why is he eying Lady Victoria’s circle?

I have great respect for social reformer Sree Narayana Guru...But remaining Lady hill circle in his name by MCC is uncalled for.

MCC stop this renaming the roads and circles in great persons names and don't defame them by calling for discussion pro and against in various forms.Befire taking diversions please introspect pros and cons of it. Eg.how many people will refer the recently renamed road in Balmatta area as Blacious D'siouza road?Even if Lady circle is renamed in whosoever name, people will call it as Lady circle only.Is it not an insult for great personality in whose name circle us renamed?
A suggestion...instead please name chithra talkies as Were Narayana Guru junction or circle...There may not be opposition.

It's not.adding any value in changing the name. Lady hill name is before you were born and Person contributed towards education and many to prosper in their lives. Think wisely and act responsibly. Otherwise life has no meaning. We have came naked to this earth and go the same ways. Be respectful and responsible leaders and citizens.

Mangalore is considered as one of the most civilised, cultured ,educated place. One of the reasons is girls education and power of woman due to their education levels. Look at Kerala.....Why the health and social indices are best in India and are on par with any of the European countries..one important reason..Women['s education......

The AC nuns realised this in 18th century and started schools ....LADY Hill is a symbol and a historic remnant of women empowerment in Mangalore...If any sectarian thinking is believing contrary to this ...good luck...We are heading towards a banana republic....

Roads/Circles are not to be named in the names of education leader/guru. Their names should be used for educational institutions only. Not for circles/roads as now a days roads/circles are used for illigal activities. If named in a Gurus name then the news will be "xxx circle this illigle activity happend" is it looks good?

In view of the history of Ladyhill educational institutions, I fully endorse the opposition to rename the hill. May be the English name is objectionable; perhaps MARIA GUDDE might pacify the objectors, as the city itself was renamed and nobody gave a darn.

Instead of renaming Lady Hill, places like Alake Junction or Kudroli where Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, consecrated by Sri Narayanan’s Guru, is situated may be renamed after him.

Instead of changing names or renaming them show some development in infrastructure. Since everywhere there is flooded and all. Please see to those things than changing names. Just asking what's the use in changing names after 100 years?

The best part of all this, is that people who are blowing their trumpet/s now were nowhere from this land at all .

They were from all the 'Hallis" around which was never a part of MANGALORE.
But the irony was they considered themselves from Mangalore even though they came from the then surrounding villages.

Mangalore was/ is from Nagori to Hoige Bazar to Urwa Stores to Nantoor and in-between . Those were the REAL Mangaloreans! Even Bondel , Ashok Nagar those days was considered separate and as outskirts!! Even going to Bajpe airport was considered as "outstation" travel, by Horse Carriage or in 1960 Impala! ( I would not put Bullock cart in that category-unless it was in the 50's).

Getting back to the point is let the good old MANGLOREANS decided names stay as is as they were the ACTUAL forefathers of the place and not those who moved there from the hallis .

Come 2020- Let's all CHILL OUT and sort out other URGENT problems facing the present and future generations like completion of "MARKETS" projects (like Central, Kadri, Urwa, Kankanady ) , eradication of Malaria and Dengue which MANGALORE is world renowned for, better roads and transportation,

...and most of all , keep to you promise of "A SMART CITY"

ROSHAN.. At least my ancestors came down from our OWN country , built it all these years so that people like you could live now.

Also, going by your logic, you must have come down the ages from NEPAL ( the only Hindu country ) to a Halli near me!

Dear well wishers of Ladyhill institutions, you have shown your concerns , just leave it. Let them change as they require, but you guys do not get upset.

The days are not far that we may have to change the name of our own house / compound, just because it does not suit their ideology / mentality

Pray that tomorrow they will not take our money from our bank account.

I am an ex-student of Ladyhill School and I strongly oppose the idea of changing the name of Ladyhill circle. It is our dear alma mater and the name has such nostalgic feelings for us. We love our school, sisters and teachers and are grateful to them for the education they gave us along with good values. Name change is only a vote game, nothing else. If our politicians want to honour Sri Narayana Guru, let them start some new project or circle and name it. Why eye on an existing circle.
Are our leaders blind to the great contribution made by these nuns to educate thousands of girls? Let Ladyhill circle be Ladyhill only and nothing else.

Why can't you leaders create a new place for Sri Narayana Guru ? Like the new Bus Stand in Nantoor, or the DC office coming up in Padil, etc. ? Why are you hurting people's sentiments for your appeasement actions ?? You will be as it is causing hurt to the great personality by snatching a title dedicated to somebody else.
