Mangaluru: Eco-friendly initiative - Bicycle path on Phalguni riverbank approved

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 4: The state government has decided to lay a bicycle path of one km length on the bank of Phalguni river where river festival had been held in the past, and which had become highly popular. The bicycle path is being laid as a part of the encouragement being provided by the government to tourism development under Karnataka Tourism Vision Group. Detailed project report relating to this project will be prepared and submitted on this project by the tourism department.

An 18-acre land has been set aside for tourism development in Bangrakulur village. About 16 acres of this land has already been handed over to it. Towards transforming Dakshina Kannada district into a major tourist hub, integrated tourism development activities will be undertaken in this spot. The proposed bicycle path will cost around one crore rupees.

There is also a proposal to set up walking zone from the seashore to Bengre for beach development and to attract more tourists. Projects towards development of Sasihithlu and Tannirbavi beaches at a cost of Rs 15 crore have already been approved. The government has ambitious plans to develop various beaches from Kasargod state border to Karwar, and district tourism departments have been asked to resubmit detailed project reports, said tourism minister C T Ravi.

Bicycle pathway help the time passers a lot. How it is eco friendly ? Is that changes on river sides help in anyway the natural habitats living there behind bushes or burrows ?

Better concentrate on erosion, security walls/fences, plantation that suits to protect erosion and that increases the natural beauty of river banks

It can be ECO friendly if there are plenty of paths in the town or city which can help people to use BiCycles instead of cars or autos etc so that there will be less pollution. In Denmark and Holland people can use Bicycles to go anywhere for short distances (10 Kms or so). These are safe and cyclists have the absolute priority. We may not get there but at least can try to do a little at a time. Other things you said are also important.

It is good to have bicycle paths not just in a tiny area but along many suitable places like beach side, river side and even in the city area. If there is money to improve roads for cars there should also be for foot paths and bi-cycles.This is quite common in many European towns. This may not be possible in Mangalore since it needs a lot of discipline in using them and also a lot of maintenance.
