In a first, Dubai airport deploys dogs to sniff and detect coronavirus

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai (SHP)

Dubai, Aug 4: As the world struggles to curb the rising coronavirus cases, countries have been coming up with preventive measures to contain the deadly disease. While the vaccine will likely take some more time before it is made available to the people, Dubai has gone ahead and come up with an interesting way to detect the virus infection in humans. The country has deployed specially-trained police dogs at its airport to single out those who are infected.

Earlier it was being considered on whether dogs could actually sniff the virus or not as the sniffer dogs have known to identify specific infections/diseases such as cancer, tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and Parkinson’s among others.

With the sniffer dogs now deployed, the UAE believes that these dogs will be efficient in detecting coronavirus infected passengers. Meanwhile, there are several countries that are still under the process of studying and experimenting with dog theory.

In a statement, Dubai’s Ministry of Interior (MoI) said, "Data and studies showed that detection of presumed Covid-19 cases achieved approximately 92 per cent in overall accuracy. Figures indicate that dogs can quickly detect infected cases, help protect key sites, effectively deal with huge crowds and secure large events, airports, etc.”

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA), along with the teams of dogs and trainers deployed at the airports reportedly screen every possibly-infected passenger. A scent sample is collected of the passenger from the armpit, which the canine sniffs in an isolated room. The specially-trained sniffer dogs generally detect the virus within seconds. Thus, no direct contact happens between the passenger and the dog.

The MoI further mentioned, "Trained detection dogs are known for their extraordinary capabilities and skills that outdo other dogs, especially their strong sense of smell. For this reason, they can be used in police patrols and securing malls, events, airports and other vital facilities."

So far, the UAE has reported 61,163 corona-positive cases and 351 deaths.

If Babaramdev Ramdev’s Patanjali claims to have Covid-19 medicine, 100% recovery in 7 days why not these sniffer dogs which are known to identify specific infections/diseases such as cancer, tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and Parkinson’s among others.
If successful, there could be great relief and time saving and cost cutting from Covid 19 lab testing.

My hats off to Dubai for deploying sniffer dogs at the airport. I am sure these dogs must be trained to detect passengers infected with coronavirus. I have seen such sniffer dogs at JFK airport in New York. These dogs are trained to detect drugs and prohibited items like plants, flowers and food items.

On the first look, the idea seems to be so stupid.
But since it is Dubai which is implementing it, I am forced to believe that it will work. I have changed my stand many times earlier. I felt it were all stupid ideas when Dubai said it will build a palm shaped island on the sea! When it said it will build a building taller than 800 meters! When it said it will make arrangements for ice skiing in Dubai!

We should appreciate the UAE government .They always use the available means as well as the latest scientific advancements to their advantage.
In India we have a huge army of scientists as well as hundereds of government research labs including canine research centres (civilian as well as defence) .Enormous amount of money is spent on them but the output is miserable. Unless the mentality of our people changes we will be just just boasting about how great our nation is and meanwhile tiny nations will overtake us.

Though the following is irrelevant to the news here, I would like to show to the readers the faithfulness of dogs. This is not a story, but an actually happened thing.

A merchant was traveling very often to the city with his wares on his horse and his dog was accompanying him. Once, after selling his wares, while returning from the city, on halfway, the dog started barking loudly and never allowed the horse to run. With anger, the merchant shot the dog. Immediately, the dog ran backwards and with curiosity, the merchant also went backwards to see the reason for the dog to run in that direction.

He found the dog dead, but found something under the dog. It was the money bag of the merchant
that contained all the money he got after selling his wares, that had fallen while returning from city.

If they had applied the technique to departing passengers, there wouldn't have so many cases in India upon people arriving from UAE

I have no doubt that the service is for arriving passengers only. Obviously !

Mr. GURKA. don't underestimate capabilities of highly trained sniffer dogs. All countries including advanced western countries still rely on trained sniffer dogs to detect banned drugs, criminals, etc .in Airports, international sea ports, railway stations etc. This is also a scientifically proved method. UAE also now evaluating the accuracy of sniffer dogs,
