Mangaluru, Aug 4: Heavy rain was reported from most parts of the coastal districts on Monday August 3. In a tragic development, an old lady from Kalthodu near Kundapur lost her life after falling into an overflowing rivulet.

The deceased was Sooru Poojary (70) from Muroor in Kundapur taluk. She was working in a field on the other side of the rivulet. On her return home from work, the water draught in the rivulet had increased. Sooru, who had crossed the rivulet without difficulty all her life, entered the rivulet without any hesitation but was dragged away due to the immense force of the water, it is said. Locals rushed to the spot on hearing her wails, but they could not rescue the lady as muddy water stymied their effort. Her body was recovered later from a spot about 200 meter away.

The city, Bantwal, Sullia, Puttur, Beltangady, Moodbidri, and Udupi, Kaup, Karkala, Kundapur,Byndoor, Brahmavar, Hebri and other places in Udupi district experienced heavy rainfall. In some areas including the city, there were gaps in between the incessant rainfall. Mani in Dakshina Kannada received the highest rainfall of 11 cm.

Due to strong wind and heavy rains, huge waves are being generated in the sea. As per the experience of the fishermen, such a situation prevails for a few days around full moon day. The meteorological department too has predicted that the velocity of the wind will be high. The Fishermen's Association president, Krishna S Suvarna, said that the country boats might not take to the sea for three to four days. The department also has predicted the possibility of low-pressure areas over the northern part of the Bay of Bengal contributing to the intensification of rainfall in the Indian peninsula. During this period, Konkan region, Goa, coastal Karnataka and some areas of Kerala are expected to get heavy rainfall. It has issued orange alert till August 8 and has also warned the fishermen against venturing into the sea.
