Moodbidri, Aug 1: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds caused widespread damage in parts of Moodbidri taluk on Friday, disrupting traffic, power supply and commercial activities.

At Aliyur Junction, a roadside tree was uprooted and fell on a parked car and a pickup vehicle, damaging both vehicles.

The fallen tree blocked the Aliyur–Moodbidri road, disrupting vehicular movement for nearly two hours. Local residents later cleared the tree, restoring traffic on the stretch.

Strong winds also damaged several shop units at the municipal market located at Swarajya Maidan, blowing away roofing sheets and tarpaulin covers.

As Friday coincided with the weekly market, business activities were severely affected. Rainwater entered several shops, causing damage to goods and resulting in losses to traders.

Power supply was also disrupted in several parts of the taluk after trees fell on electricity poles due to the inclement weather. Electricity department personnel worked to restore power in the affected areas.
