Sullia, Aug 1: A herd of wild elephants has been camping in the Kandadka area near Duggaladka in Sullia taluk for the past two days, causing extensive damage to agricultural crops and triggering fear among local residents.

According to villagers, the elephants have repeatedly entered plantations in Kandadka and nearby areas over the last few days, destroying arecanut, banana and other crops. Farmers said the damage to agriculture has been substantial.

On Friday night and early Saturday morning, three wild elephants entered the plantation of Ajayakrishna in Kandadka, trampling and uprooting crops, resulting in heavy losses.

Locals said the herd is currently staying in the forest area near Guligana Katte at Neerabidire. With the elephants moving close to human settlements, residents have been warning one another to avoid venturing outdoors during the night.

Forest department personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information and are closely monitoring the movement of the elephants. Efforts are underway to safely drive the herd back into the forest.

Meanwhile, incidents of wild elephant movement continue to be reported along forest-fringe areas in Belthangady taluk. An elephant was sighted near the Nirapada Bhajana Mandir at Barengaya, raising concern among residents.

As the animal is suspected to be moving towards the Karyatadka area, local residents have been alerted through WhatsApp messages and advised to remain cautious.
