Mangaluru: DC draws airport director's attention to inept handling of passengers

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 14: The deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada, on Wednesday May 13, shot off a letter to the director of Mangaluru International Airport, drawing his attention to certain inadequacies pointed out by some passengers on their arrival at the airport here.

She drew the attention of the director to reports appearing in a section of the media about passengers who arrived at the airport here the day before facing difficulties on arrival. "Even though the fact that certain special categories of passengers like pregnant women and people requiring medical support were in the said flight, as per reports, the airport did not arrange enough people like porters, assistant staff etc. The passengers reportedly were not briefed properly on the procedure they had to undergo at the airport," she wrote.

The DC attracted the attention of the director of the airport to the fact that during her visit to the airport on May 9, she had issued instructions to extend support the passenger arriving on May 12. She has requested the director to personally oversee the arrangements during the next flight to make sure that such incidents do not get repeated, and help the district administration in coordinating with airport authorities and concerned airlines bringing passengers.

Daijiworld TV had taken special initiative and complaints were escalated to the district administration after which the state government issued revised standard operating procedure (SOPs) for international returnees. Also, the DC has now urged the airport director to personally oversee the arrangements.

Later in the eveneg, on a live show on Daijiworld TV, airport director V V Rao clarified many issues and assured to clear them. Answering a number of questions he said that food packets were not promised to the passengers as it was not a regular commercial flight. He also informed that even though the handling of luggage was assigned to an agency, the cleaning staff had helped the passengers load the luggage into the buses. He further assured to take personally handle the issues during the next flight with all available resources. He also added that he would assign 10 more people to help passengers with luggage and see that no inconvenience is caused to any of the passengers.

The Mangalore International Airport is only interested in the yellow metal. When it comes to the service it don't even like to rate it. No airport in the world pat screening of the home bound passenger even after x-ray screening but this airport it is norms. Only baggage need to waited for one hour even though I don't have declare anything to the custom.

Ever since this airport is awarded 'Andani' newly formed company who has not experience handling the passengers, the service is falling to lowest despite the passengers are charged various taxes.

As far as present crisis it Airport Director, DC and the local elected representative are equally responsible for the mismanagement.

Every Indian is aware of the evacuation. And no one wants to travel at this time if the situation in the foreign country we stay is affordable and with in our limits.

Here we can see so many jobless people.
The greatest challenge is accomodation and utility bills. Food can be privided but what about medical facilities and specially for people of determination and pregnant ladies.

Every human wants to live. And so they will definitely go back to their motherland.

We are aware in advance and are needed to handle only one flight of passengers that too within 200. What if we had to receive 2000 passengers at a time.

It is the responsibility to bring out the best services. And not to blame others. It is me who has to my best.
If the authorities cannot take the challenge let them advice in advance. We are not interested who is the subcontractor. The Airport autorities are responsible.

They allowed hotel arrangements at the airport and also receiving the passengers. So need to be 1:1 and with proper guidelines.

The moment we start our journey, it is not only the travel time of flights, the start time from home and advance time arrival at airports and then after landing the tiredness of the journey.

2010 when there was a crash at Mangalore, we were not prepared neither the administration nor the hospitals.

But here we have everything in advance.

Airport Director's role is limited. The airport operator provides services like aircraft docking, terminal facilities and city side facilities.
Other arrangements have to be taken up by the district administration which will include food/water/transport/accommodation.
At Calicut Airport, the District Collector, Supdt. of Police, Dy.Collector, RTA chief, are personally available for each repatriation flight and every movement tracked through a WA group.
All have to take responsibility and not dump blame on any individual.

Sri elder, Your advise for people to stay back in Dubai is illogical. NRIs are not coming to your home, they are going their own home (after quarantine) built by their hard earned money! They have contributed immensely to district, state and the country with the money earned outside. For your kind info they are not looking for any jobs....at least for now. At the time of distress they want to be at their mother land and home! Will you not urge to return home during crisis ???? NRIs do know whether to stay in Dubai or to head to their own home!!!

We desh wasis are so used to others doing our jobs and tasks, we find it very difficult even to handle our own bags while travelling and wait on some one to handle it. Yes, at times help is required in critical situations but can not rely on the help always to happen. Blaming Airport authorities and District Administration for every short coming will not help given the present situation as they are also under tremendous pressure from every corner. We forget the fact that they are also human beings and are normal like every one of us and can not perform miracles. Given the situation all around what is required is some adjustments and understanding to get over the difficult times for every one. Here no one is serious about following rules and each one makes own choices unlike gulf countries where you follow the law or get out. Hope situation at IXE will improve in handling future flights.

I agree with you. I am given to understand that once the luggage passes through the conveyor belt through which the luggage comes, it's the passenger who recognises it and picks it up. Passengers, please note... this is emergency flight. Pregnant ladies/old people please come with your minimum luggage which you can lift. But not with big suitcases as you come for holidays.....everything is available here at our place. Husbands don't send your wives with so many bags... If a person cannot pick from the conveyor belt, please ask help from other passengers to pick it up. No one will say "NO"....Though we stay here, we too have gone through so many hardships, some even got beaten up when they went out on emergency. Please adjust... Just think we are all human beings here... during this situation. Status is next.

    No one will say "NO"?

Once a lady in distress asked me to help her with her bag. My own bag was lighter than 20 kg. I do not know what the lady packed - but the weight seemed like at least 100 kg.

I almost broke my back, helping the lady with her bag.

After that, I decided to say "NO".

So if any lady begins to approach me with an angelic smile at the airport, I smile back and walk away as quickly as I can! Why break the only back you have got?

Most of the above Comments and Advices to the pregnant women are like "Shameless " "come with min. Language " ......itc ..... are out of " ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಕಿಚ್ಚ " and " ಮತ್ಸ್ಸರ " nothing else!!!! Real intention of those people who comments above are like " I'm suffering due to incompetent decision by our "UNPAD" leaders you also suffer when you step out from the the flight "
Secondly, all the passengers are paid heavy price for each ticket including " State of Art " taxes !!!!!!!(those taxes never seen anywhere in the world) even they are payable to the porters also, therefore it's passengers write to hire a porter and authority should make it available.

Amit, you are one of the persons who has humanity, good heart, helping nature, compassion, concern, understanding etc etc. Some people like us suffering from ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಕಿಚ್ಚು and ಮತ್ಸರ. What we gain from those passengers by having jealousy? What we gain by burning out stomach? Pregnant ladies who are due should reach safely. They are two not one. If she travels with her minimum luggage it will be easier for her even in her room to shift the baggage. Otherwise she will have to go through the pains. Extra luggage whatever it is, her husband can bring when he comes on leave. Secondly, we are behind unpad leaders. You are educated and many others like you. Why you didn't elect "padhe likhe" ministers? You should have worked hard and elected educated one. Simply you have to suffer now....

The passengers are compelled to stay in the hotels selected by the government. Since the passengers are paying the charges, any deficiency in hotel service should be the responsibility of the hotel management and the government. The passengers can sue them in consumer court for compensation. Please make the hotel staff aware of this, so that proper service is provided at the basic international standard.

Swati, it is their fundamental right to come back to their country. Govt. is not paying for anything. Since the passengers are paying for the 3 star hotels, they should get 3 star hotel services. Period. No one is doing a favour here. One has to understand that these people used to live in higher standard of life and we should not compare them to contract labourers who are living in slums. We should apply "Equal but separate" theory here. When you pay business class fare for the flight, you should get business class services and not economy class for example. Again, all passengers are equal but separate by class. Even a slum dweller can fly on business class, if he can afford to.

What will the letter - however worded - achieve?

A private organisation cannot be compelled to behave like a Government department.
