Thumbe dam to solve Mangaluru's drinking water woes during summer?

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 2: With improved inflow at the Thumbe vented dam that takes care of drinking water requirement of the city, there is hope that this summer the city may not face any water shortage. With the water coming into the dam reaching robust level, once in three days, additional water is allowed to flow outside.

Compared to the level of 5.79 metres registered last year at the dam on February 28, the level now is six metres. At the same time, plans are afoot to comply with the processes to increase the level of water to seven metres, but it might take time. If no pre-monsoon rains appear till May end, there may be some problems. Small bunds constructed inside Netravati river at various places by farmers makes it hard to gauge the actual inflow of water.

Assistant executive engineer of the city corporation Naresh Shenoy, said that he does not expect water scarcity to be experienced during this summer, as water level is six metres and there is inflow of water. He points out that the water level this time is more than the last year's level at this point of time.

Newly elected mayor of the city, Diwakar Pandeswhar, said that it will be ensured that the citizens do not face water shortage. He also said he will try to see that compensation is disbursed to affected people so that the water level in the dam can be maintained to the full level of seven metres.

Dam will not solve the problem if the green cover depletion is not addressed. Increase the forests, and the water will flow in the rivers even during the dry season.

Instead giving importance to drinking water the MCC liberally gives water for construction purpose. Thats why we find shortage to drinking water. Water should be used economically and wisely. First recover that crores of rupess that is pending outstanding from many water consumers and builders.

Already levels of water in open wells have gone down dangerously; and with increasing temperatures, the water supply situation, contrary to claims, remains grim!!

Forget summer... Since last three weeks our area in Mangaluru is not getting water. They give 15 to 30 minutes very fine water which will never go to overhead tanks. That too in any time of the day they leave water either early mornings 3/4 or late night after 11 without our knowledge . When needed no water. On inquiry they say one part of the gate valve has broken and got stuck in the pipe. To repair the valve they need so much time? Now, phones are not lifted. Those who have wells/sumps can adjust... others are really leading a disastrous life without water including me. I have a doubt, water thats supposed to come to area must be diverted to some buildings for which the concerned authorities are paid off....
