Mangaluru: Kambala race - Nishant Shetty creates new 100 mtrs record

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 18: Within days of Kambala racer, Srinivas Gowda from Mijar creating new record by completing 100 metres Kambala race in 9.55 seconds, Nishant Shetty has covered this distance in just 9.52 seconds and thus broken the record of Gowda. With this, four Kambala participants have joined the elite club of people who have completed 100 metres race in less than ten seconds. Their names are Iruvathur Anand (9.57 secs), Akkeri Suresh Shetty (9.57 secs), Srinivas Gowda (9.55 secs), and Nishant Shetty (9.52 secs).

Srinvas Gowda had completed 142.5 metres race at the Aikala Kambala on February 1 in 13.62 seconds. The average of this speed works out to 9.55 seconds for 100 metres. On Sunday, Nishant Shetty from Bajagoli Jogibettu broke this record at Soorya-Chandra Jodukare Kambala at Venoor by covering 100 metres in 9.52 seconds.

In the semi final of 'Hagga-Hiriya' section of the Kambala competition, Shetty who was in charge of the buffaloes owned by Hosabettu Gopalakrishna Bhat, covered 141 metres distance in 13.61 seconds, which is 9.52 seconds for 100 metres.

It may be recalled that Usain Bolt from Jamica had claimed the title of being the fastest runner in the world by completing 100 meters race in 9.58 seconds. The creation of new records this year has been receiving lavish praises in social websites and Nishant Shetty has been getting lot of accolades for his achievement.

Kamabla Academy convener, Gunapal Kadamba, mentions that Panapila Praveen Kotian who won a medal by racing buffaloes at Soorya-Chanra Jodukare Kambala, Bajagoli Jogibettu Nishant Shetty, Mijar Ashwathpura Srinvas Gowda, Kadandale Atith Shetty, Bellar Panne Nasir and Nakre Manjunath Bhandary, all of whom have been recording stellar peformances, were trained in Kambala Academy.

Nishant Shetty Bajagoli expressed happiness for creating a new record in Kambala race. But he felt that it would not be proper to compare this race with world-renowned athletes like Usain bolt as there is difference between Kambala field and race tracks.

This is a media hype. Buffello race (Kambala) is quite different from track race. So dont compare those Kambala racers with Usain Bolt. Its funny to talk about Olympics for Kambala raceres! Nowadays nobody takes our regional media very serious!! So please dont insult Usain Bolt the fastest runner on this planet.

I remember when I was cycling during my school days, I used to catch hold of a passing by truck in its rear end from Pumpwell to Kankanady which was a steep slope and I used to reach the point very quickly without peddling. Without holding a truck, I would not imagine reaching that distance so quickly and easily. These two gentlemen are definitely excellent in kambala race, but please don’t compare them to Usain Bolt who is a living legend. If we want to compare someone to Usain Bolt, the comparison should be between those buffaloes and him.

What you said is correct. Can not compare Usain Bolt who is running from his own strength without any support like Buffaloes are pulling .

Here is what happened in Kambala is that the buffaloes are running very fast and pulling the man beyond so the person who is holding buffaloes tail, runs automatically fast with support of Buffalo.

But one thing is sure that the person must have full stamina and strength and this race is also great. Government must recognise these person and should reward them.

At least the Kambala race will become more known and popular unlike Jallikattu in Tamilanadu which has been criticised by activists. But let us not compare this with 100 Meters Olympic race or a Formula 1 car race and compare timings. As the man himself has said thie recognition should go to the Buffaloes and has rejected the invitation to SAI.

Sompa, Kodi, Bengre has made a good point. One thing to remember is that in the kambala races the buffalos are responsible for generating the speed. I think the runner actually runs in with the terrific momentum created by the buffalos. With regular practice behind the buffalos the runners have enhanced their running power possibly even without their own knowledge.
If we ask these runners to run on a flat truck they will miss the pulling force of the buffalos for sure. It is unfair to compare the kambala racers in a muddy field against the normal runners on a flat track with spikes.
The kambala racers are blessed with a fit and strong body. If someone is able to convert them and change their mindset to run without the support of the buffalos we can see a ray of hope. But that will be a very long and improbable shot. Worth trying nevertheless.
At the end, certain vested interests are hogging the limelight despite knowing the end result.

I'm an huge fan of Kamabala, but i'm missing these golden occasions in gulf.
Now regarding record breaking. In Olympics, there will be advance technology to measure the time & accuracy. Also in Olympics, athlete should follow certain rules by running on same track line. In Olympics, key point is startup. If startup goes on-time, finishing will good as expected. But in Kamabala, its really different scenario & in Kamabala, main requirement is stamina. During Kamabala, runner get less air pressure than actual athlete of Olympics. Because in Kamabala, buffaloes running in front & runner in back, so he will get less pressure of air keep is speed ahead. Also he getting an good influence of Buffaloes force too during race. I'm not criticizing any Kamabala racer, but my point is comparison should be in same type of sports. Kamabala racers should award every year, but comparison should be in healthy manner.

This will become a headache for the government as well as the Kambala Organizers.
It's good that people are breaking & making new records, but there should be technology & effective mechanism in place to count the speed.
Government has felicitated a guy breaking record but there is no actual measuring mechanism in place at Kambala.
Government should create a award annually to honour fastest runners in the Kambala & also the buffalo's, the Owners of those buffalo's.

With due respect to sportive kambala runners I would like to highlight few points.
100m race in Olympics is entirely different scenario where the track is synthetic and the start is crucial.
Buffaloes add the momentum to the runner by the pull and air stream minimizes body friction of the runner with the air. These criteria s shall be considered and the algorithms to be made for the corrected timings.
Bolt creates a thrust of 700-800 pounds against ground during his start. This is remarkable and puts him in lead. Similar techniques to be adopted by the runners.
Kambala runners have the ability to raise Olympic level provided they are trained to international standard.

Bolt will overtake the buffaloes. This is due to the mighty pull by animals. Kambala runner can only run asp the buffaloes speed max. One must consider at the moment these buffaloes are fastest in the arena.

I was a farmer I have ran holding the rope with the buffaloes.. its a flying feeling with the force. Please dont make a mockery of Kambala runners. They have stamina, let them practice. Lets appreciate their achievements but dont compare them to Bolt at the moment. First them take part in Karnataka level competitions.

Running in Kambla and Olympics has huge difference.

    Kambala:
Even if you don't run Bafellos will make you to run.
There will be stage fear but you cannot cut down you're speed as you will be pulled out by Bafellos.
    Olympics
You got to run on the track side by side with competition
There will.be huge pressure in the mind and still you have to force yourself to be No.1
In Kambala Bafellos play huge role
We can break any amount of records but records in the field and Olympic will have huge difference
Anyway our poor guys are shining with this game. I am glad with their achievement.
