Mangaluru, Dec 10: “The citizens of this country are feeling insecure as the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has created panic among them. The spending nature of the citizens has gone down as people spend when they feel happy and safe. The proposal of NRC has scared the people of this country. This has forced them to save the money and not spend as they are not sure about their future. NRC is extremely detrimental to the economy and growth of the country as it stalls spending and promotes saving,” said former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan.
Kannan Gopinathan was speaking at the SDM Law College in the city on Tuesday on the topic ‘Live and Let Live’. He termed NRC as inhumane and Citizen Amendment Bill (CAB) as unconstitutional.
He said, “In spite of knowing the developments in the country and still sitting quiet amounts to anti-national activity. Fundamental rights of the citizens are in danger as they are not allowed to speak against the authority. No one is allowed to give their opinion on any decisions taken by the government.
“When the rights of our own countrymen living in other states are in danger, it is time for us to protest. Human right violation in Jammu and Kashmir by the central government is known to everyone. Leaders of the state are kept under house arrest, communication channels are shut down and citizens of the state are asked to be quiet and not make any comment on the situation. In a democratic country every citizen has the right to voice his opinion.
“The judiciary which should be controlling the government has completely failed in its actions. Media, which is supposed to show the reality to the people of the nation is favouring the government. The TV channels were showing that people of Jammu and Kashmir were celebrating the scrapping of article 370, whereas in reality, they were against it. The number of people dying, both civilian and military in the state of Jammu and Kashmir is on the rise.
“It is always better to bring the failures of the government through public opinion than sitting quiet,” he said.
