Madikeri, Aug 20: In an incident which happened at Polibetta in Kodagu district, miscreants shot a cow dead for making beef. The incident happened on Sunday August 18.

Shankappa Rai had allowed his cow for grazing near his house on Sunday morning. As it did not return even in the evening, he went searching for it but failed to find it. At around 7.30 pm the same day, he heard the sound of bullet being fired. He immediately went in the direction of the sound and found that a few people were busy preparing beef by killing his cow. The gang made good its escape at the sight of people.

A complaint in this respect was filed in Siddapur police station. On the basis of information provided by some people, a person was grilled. The police are making efforts to find out the culprits and book them.

The locals say that in farms where ginger is being cultivated, crackers are burst and in between bullets are fired to conceal their sound, for killing cows. They say that crackers are burst to spread the notion that elephants are being scared away, but under the cover of this sound, cows are being fired at and killed for beef.
