Bantwal, Jun 27: The compensation that was given to a person in the taluk, who lost 23 areca nut trees, two coconut trees and roof of a cow shed due to natural calamity, was a mere Rs 800 by Revenue and Horticulture department. The beneficiary had to spend Rs 710 to encash the said cheque. This matter was raised by Haider, member of taluk panchayat in the general body meeting that was held on Wednesday, June 26.

Haider further said, "According to the report of the village accountant, who did the survey of the damage, the revenue department gave a cheque for Rs 800 to the affected victim. When the cheque was presented in the bank, it got bounced saying that the signature of the tahsildar is not matching with their records. So the farmer had to spend Rs 710 to encash the same. This is an insult to the farmer."

Tungappa Bangera, member of zilla panchayat supported the claim of Haider and said, "The government that always speaks of uplifting the farmers has given pittance to the farmer and insulted him."

Zilla panchayat member M S Mohammed urged the Tahsildar to consider this matter as serious and reassess the losses incurred by the beneficiary and provide him additional compensation.

Zilla panchayat member Mamata Gatty said that compensation is not paid to the houses that collapsed in the Pajeeru village. Tahsildar Rashmi S R said that they also feel the urge to help the victims. But cannot help as they are part of the government and have to work as per the circular of the government.

Member Usman Karoppadi said, "Adalat, only to reach the target of the government need not be held. If assistant commissioner is not there what is the point in conducting revenue adalat? In most of the revenue adalats that are held in the rural areas, even village accountants of the panchayat are not attending. Then what is the point in conducting the revenue adalat?"

Executive officer Rajanna welcomed and rendered the vote of thanks.

We pay a substantial amount towards registration of our properties(Land, house, etc). Also, there is a house and property tax that is paid on a yearly basis, which again is a good amount for which we do not realize any benefit. One humble request to the authorities is to utilize part of this tax that we pay for insurance of the said properties, so that during such disasters, the common need not beg in front of their elected representatives or compensation.
