Archbishop Ambrose Madtha Dies in Accident in Ivory Coast

Archbishop Ambrose Madtha Dies in Accident in Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast, Dec 9 (Agencies): The papal envoy to Ivory Coast, Indian Archbishop Ambrose Madtha, has been killed in a road accident in the west of the country, the Ivorian church announced.

Madtha was travelling back from the northwestern town of Odienne to an ordination ceremony in the country’s west on Saturday evening when his car collided with another vehicle.

“Unfortunately the apostolic nuncio died on the spot,” said Mathieu Tehan, spokesman for the western diocese of Man where the ceremony was to take place.

President Alassane Ouattara, in a statement read on national television, expressed his “deep regret” at the death and sent condolences to the church and Madtha’s family.

Madtha was born in Belthangady near Mangalore, India in 1955 to the late Joseph Madtha and May Madtha. He was the brother of Fr Henry Madtha and Rev Srs Theresa Madtha SCB and Bridget Madtha FMM.

He was an MA in Economics from Nagpur University and did his B Ed from Lucknow University. He studied Philosophy and Theology at St Charles Seminary Nagpur and obtained doctorate in canon law from Urban Univeristy in Rome.

He was ordained a priest in 1982.

Ambrose Madtha entered diplomatic service in June 1990 and had served apostolic nunciatures in Ghana, El Salvador, Georgia, Albania and Republic of China (Taiwan).

He became the doyen of the Ivorian diplomatic corps after arriving in 2008.

He tried to play a behind-the-scenes mediating role during Ivory Coast’s 2010-11 political crisis when the previous ruler, Laurent Gbagbo, refused to step down even though Ouattara was declared winner of presidential elections.

The Catholic church was put in a delicate position since some of the country’s bishops favoured Gbagbo, who comes from the country’s majority Christian south.
Ouattara is from the largely Muslim north.

Last month Ouattara, accompanied by his Christian wife, met Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.

Ivory Coast and the Vatican agreed on “the role that the Catholic Church can offer for the good of the country, by encouraging and promoting human rights, dialogue and national reconciliation”, the Vatican said in a statement at the time.

Gbagbo is now awaiting trial for crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Around 40 percent of Ivory Coast’s population is Muslim and 40 percent Christian. Some 20 percent are believers in native religions.

The most shocking moment of our lives, as if one shock was not enough for the whole family to handle. You have been the strength for all of us, especially, mummy. Tears just roll into our eyes difficult to stop them by this very thought of you not being around us.
We remember the days when we used to eagerly wait for your letter and cards and have your company for a few days that you used to visit us in Mumbai, We remember both me and my brother's childhood days when you used to play and teach us and instilled the good values. Its difficult to imagine how its going to be without you around. You have been our mentor and guide with your teaching of God's love for us, power of prayers and to love one and another. We pray for thee and receive our feelings and look upon us.
We know just as you told for papa that he is with the Almighty we know you are with him in the arms of the Almighty, Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. We pray for you and may you rest in peace.

Its very sad and shocking to know that Archbishop Ambrose died of an accident. May his Soul rest in Peace! My heartfelt condolences to his brothers and sisters, relatives and friends. I had known him from the minor seminary days in Lucknow, since 1970. Then we were in St. Charles Seminray, Nagpur for Philosophy and Theology. And again in Rome during our higher studies. He was known for his simplicity, friendliness, hardwork and prayer life. He was a great Devotee of our Lady. He was an example for all his classmates.
It was great Joy to speak to him on the phone quite often. Last year he visited me in Germany and celebrated a Pontifical Mass for my parishioners from both the Parishes Rudersberg and Welzheim. So today (9.12.2012) all were shocked to hear the news of his sudden death. All pray for his Soul and convey heartfelt condolences to his family members.
Archbishop Ambrose it was a great Joy talking to you and sharing our Joys and Sorrows. I have lost a good and trustworthy friend. My dear Ambrose, I will be missing you very much. I am sure, you will be sending your blessings to me from heaven. All your German friends are schocked with the sad news. All are praying for your Soul. May you rest in Peace!

I had the privilege of having you for our Silver Wedding Concelebration Mass this May. We promised each other to meet again. But God's wish was different. May your soul rest in peace.
