Bantwal: Rare Ancient Ritual of ‘Mookambika Guliga Bootha’ Held

Bantwal, May 15: As a part of religious worship, ‘Mookambika Guliga Bootha’, an ancient form of worship prevalent among the Tulu-speaking community, was hosted by the family in Manila of Bantwal district.

In the practice, the ‘Mookambika Guliga’ (worship of Holy Spirit) is slowly prepared for self-hypnotism and for imposing the spirit on him. It is then taken in a procession along with instruments to a place where the holy fire is lit.

The possessed spirit puts all its efforts into jumping on the gutted place made of areca nut trees.

The worship started late night and went on till morning. All this practice stops on 'Pathanaje' (the last day for such ritual in Tulu dialect). This particular ‘Bhoota’ was hosted after 16 years in the village, the devotees said.

“This particular form of Bhoota, is rarely practiced anywhere as it takes in lot of risk as it is performed with burning fire,” said one of the villagers.

“Such worship is considered to be the guardians of the villages, and is believed to be having powers of helping and showing grace. They also play an important role in the folk judicial system,” he informed.

Bhoota Kola has an artistic look to it with the spirit wearing unique costumes, dancing to the tunes of drums and wind instruments, as it gets closer to possession of the spirit, the tempo depth increases. A typical costume is a gown made of palm leaves and a big nimbus like structure called ‘ani’ made of palm leaf and decorated with a few ornaments.

Surely bhootha here doesnot mean devil or satan . They refer to what you call demigods. so when there is a bhootha kola we are basically propiciating god and with that we also pray for the spirits of our ancestors to protect and bless or family and home .If any of you are going to debate and try to find logics in god and culture . I think you are treading a path that has no end . Its just about your faith in these systems. Lets learn to respect that .

@ paresh bhai , mulki/ahmedabad , God or God's or devathas or bhootas can be omnipresent. But please keep humours aside when discussing delicate topics like 'spirituality' or 'religion' as it may hurt others , irrespective of intent.

'Santhmari' is nothing but concept keeping in mind people ' mate marali manage hogu baradu'. It's same like Hindu Festival/Temple Festival and same it's what calls 'Urs' organized by Muslims.

Zulu 'Bhoota' cannot able to cross shore to enter India - but in case of Tulunadu 'Bhoota' it can travel anywhere it likes - no visa/passport required. If need anybody at once in India - within a day person will be there at home without making any noise because our bhootas are having blessing from God itself.

A well documented pictorial article. Very well highlights the grand native tradition. A tradition which is parrt of the heritage of Tulu Nadu , which needs to be preserved in the fast pace devlopment. Thank you daiji for this article. Its very pleasing to see some good collection of pictures.

Mr.Rajesh Gonsalves..Mangalore,Cairo.You have NO KNOWLEDGE about Tulunadu Bhoota. This Bhoota is not DEAD MAN'S soul or Preta or Pishachi.Being a Mangalorean,it is your duty to know what is happening around (your religion or my religion nothing to do with this).I am very much disappointed with your comment.

It is very nice of Roshan Braganza/Udyavara - who I think is a Christian by faith and Mr.KR Prabhu/Kudla/Bangalore to elaborate on Mookambika guliga bootha held by Tulu community - it was shedding light on the event held and I can understand to some extent from you both what it is all about
Roshan Braganza's write up is much better but Prabhu also told us what it is all about.
I respect the culture and from the pictures I find it very devotional for the Tulu speaking people
However, I did not see any other tulu speaking persons trying to explain this event - for others to understand - people like Dinesh Poojary etc - do they have the same knowledge of christian who explained so well abt this Mela and Mr. prabhu too -
I wish I was there to witness the Mukambika Guliga Bootha - one need not be of the same religion to witness these age old rituals - they are historical events for mothers and religious to that particular community

Guys please do not hurt others feelings. These customs are being performed for ages. For me these are the customs which keeps people in the neighborhood together and fearful of someone unknown. It’s good for the society rather than imposing our own superficial customs and beliefs on others. For me bootha kola, santhmari were the same as we enjoyed a lot with friends (eating charmuri, goli soda, etc etc) during our adolescent.

If "Ghost are spirits of humans dwelled on this earth" why they are present only in DK/Udupi dist."If a person was bad and died sure he is gonna evil ghost" that means a man who was good and died becomes a 'good ghost'. Why does he become a ghost if he was good? Roshan Braganza, arent you contradicting yourself. For me God is supreme. If people believe in 'Bhoota aradhane' let them. After all its being practiced from many years and is much better than rolling over leftovers.

Mr.Paresh Mehta..I doubt you are younger brother of Mr.Malhotra who is missing now.You are lucky that you came to tulu naadu which is believed to be close to GOD or known as God's Place.

    Dear Paresh
Many Daiji readers are good, non-communal, peace loving and all that. You see that in their comments! That's why you are 'Bachaav'! Nobody 'dares' a Bhoota or Bhootaaradhane here in DK and Udupi Districts!! No questions asked, like you may have in some cases in your 'community'too!Sometime back , in these columns I had enquired for something from a community, which I love very much (especially pretty girls and in my hey times they were abundant) and got such torrid backlashes that my back aches even now thinking of them! Nobody is that
'mild'here if you provoke them! I did not but still got! But many ,many, were kind. But you can't please all -right? So now you are warned!

@paresh mehta , I can understand ur sceptic but there is a difference betwean ghost ( bhoota ) and evil. Ghost are spirits of humans dwelled on this earth and there r other devine spirit also ( non human). Tulu God has both human and divine spirits .

If a person was bad and died sure he is gonna evil ghost . But here we are talking about divine Gods and spirits , so the answer is power comes from God himself ( or u can say from good being , atheist point of view )

It is better you keep away from Tulunaadu culture and practicies here as you are not beieving in such rituals/unaware of facts,as it appears from your comment.People since ages here practice/believe in Bhootha aaradhane which is a integral part of culture.
Bhoothas are believed 'Ganas' of Lord Shiva and protect believers from evil things. As per legend even in Sree Khethra Dharmasthala 'Annappa daiva'(essentially bhootha) is the superior among other 'Dharma Devathes' who are believd to be serving Lord Manjunatha and 'Dhamadhikari' of 'Boodu'.
We firmely believe these since ages and there is no question of pondering over your irrelevent queries.

Tulu culture and worship is very interesting . I used get scared of bhootas when i was child , but found every bhoota or spirit has story behind it. For eg : its the spirit of person called bobbarya from kaup , he was working in barkur king palace , the good man and died a martyrs death. Same applies to koti chennayya , kanta bare. There other Gods like boar called panjurli , ganas from brahma ( vedic God) called as byderlu. Its bit confusing betwean vedic Gods and tulu Gods. As from some archaeological books , tulu r from zulu tribes from africa and migrated to india thousands years ago. So these Gods bear resemblence to sum african Gods.

Good things is in the hands of God
Bad things is in the hands of Satan
If one who benefits from 'Bhoota-Aradane' from where did power derived from God or Satan?.
